It looks a though someone used a GM side terminal battery cable. The boot is a hard rubber, you may be able to warm it with a heat gun, and wiggle a socket into the boot. Personally, I would just get a sharp knife and just cut it open. It will be difficult, but if you can remove the majority of the boot, you'll be able to re-use the cable as if it just had a normal lug on the end..

Maj.kangaroo-

A Web search says that these may be Freightliner cables:

Pos. # 06-31418-000
Neg. # 06-31417-000
Nuts # 21-11145-001

If so, a Freightliner dealer could tell you how they are attached and removed from the batteries.

After a second look (at a newer version of these), it appears the design is such that rubber should be soft enough for you to get a socket around the nut on the battery stud/lug/terminal.

By the pictures, these batteries seem to have a male threaded stud on each terminal. I had batteries with threaded terminals, but female- that is, a bolt through the battery cable lug and into the terminal.

Maj.kangarooGive the terminals a good cleaning and blow the crude out from around the nut then a thin wall sprocket should be able to remove them.

MajKangaroo,
Well Sir, guess I should-a opened this thread a day or two ago. I have the same exact cables on our coach, an '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the CAT C-7 330HP. What it appears on your cables is, someone's changed the "inner nuts" on them. Those are the wrong nuts for those posts on those cables. In the picture below, you'll see how they're supposed to look. The nuts are supposed to have a lower section that actually fits INSIDE that rubber surround that you're having your trouble with.

In other words, there is a round section to the nut that fits inside the rubber and, unless it's pride out of the cable end, it normally will not be removed when the cable(s) are removed for service or battery change. It's kind-a like having a washer welded to the bottom of the nut that is inside the rubber and spins while you're loosening or tightening the nut above.
Scott
