Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS)

Hello all!

Getting ready to pick up a 2006 Adventurer 38J upgraded to 50A service. I've downloaded a lot of manuals including the Chassis and full wiring diagrams. WHEW! And I thought my Piper Archer 4 seat plane was complex. LOL

OK...

I am not finding anything to tell me specifically what model/make of ATS I have and the rig is 2.5 hours aways from me. I am wondering if anyone knows of a resource that can help me find that info before I call my sale person on Monday.

While on the subject...

Assuming the ATS doesn't have an kind of surge protection, any recommendations on portable vs direct connect? How about brands?

Warning...I put the NEW in NEWBIE! Just internet smart enough to be stupid.

Winnebago doesn't include surge protection. Unless the previous owner added one, it doesn't have one. I would recommend the Progressive Industries EMS-LCHW50C. It probably has the Parallax ATS-50 transfer switch.

It looks like from the latest WIT Club mag that they are now putting the TRC Surge Guard on and if it weren't for that add...I wouldn't have even known to ask the question. LOL Yes, it does look like a rather new addition to the higher end rigs.

Any thoughts on hard wired vs. portable?

THANKS!!!

pdf page 140 of your parts book (http://www.winnebagoind.com/service/...06/6wpg38j.pdf) indicates you have a Parallax 5070 ATS switch (http://www.parallaxpower.com/ATS/ATS..._op_Manual.pdf)

How do you find the parts list keyed to a specific year and model?

Start from here: Manuals & Diagrams and follow through the links. If you go here: Service Parts Lists (accessed by selecting 'Parts Catalog' and then 'Service Parts Lists' in the oval on the center left of the page) you can enter your Winnebago Serial Number and get the as-built parts list for your particular coach.

That rules out a portable EMS and also requires I use a 50A to 30A converter block without a pig tail. With that in mind, hardwire seems best. Unless I hear something to change my mind I plan to go with:

Progressive Industries 50 amp Hardwire Surge Protector EMS-HW50C at the power station

Progressive Energy Management System 240Volt / 50Amp Hardwired w/ Remote Display

and

Progressive Industries Remote Display in the coach

http://www.rvupgradestore.com/Progressive-Ind-Remote-Display-useEMSHW-seriesonly-p/ems-rds.htm

Prices at RVupgrades look good and they have a very good rating on eBay too. Called them up and they can get it delivered to my dealer by Wednesday to have it installed before I pick up my MH on Friday.

I considered the Surge Guard ATS which is cheaper and puts it all in one box but the specs on the PI unites were a bit better and having the remote readout keeps me informed without going outside the coach. To get those features in a SG ATS was a bit more overall.

You must do as the fire inspectors say.

But just for reference, I have used the external 50a TRC surge protector for two very wet Seattle winters. The only 'rain' protection was the plastic lock that surrounds the plug connection. And we have had lots of rain. No problems at all.

I chose the external device, because if the unit took a big hit, and decided to smoke and burn, I didn't want that going on inside my electrical compartment. Just a personal choice, the hardwired units are very good, I am sure.

The way I do my 50 to 30 amp conversion would get you by the fire inspectors. I use the 50/30 adapter on the end of the 50 amp cable which I leave coiled up in the basement compartment and then use a 25' 30 amp extension cable to connect to the pedestal.
