6v battery upgrade

Hello all.I'm changing my 12v batteries to 4 6v batteries in my 2005 Journey.
I followed Mr.Tuit's plan for fittment, but my question is for upgrading the slide load fro m 200 lbs to 300 lb slides for the extra 100 lbs of weight?

I didn't do anythimg on our 2005 Journey except to examine the structural integrity of the battery tray. The coctco golf cart batteries i purchased were 58lbs each so at less than 240 lbs i am confident that it wasnt manufactured to fail with only an extra 40 lbs

BobbyH: I also switched from 3-12v to 4-6V-GC2.

* You may find your battery tray very rusty on the bottom. Just wire brush it and paint with Rustolum Rust Restore Paint.

* This is a good time to clean your 200A fuse and lug bolts. No doubt they are a little rusty. And if you really go all out, this is also the time to disassemble and clean your chassis grounds!

* When you place your new batteries in the tray... I would turn them so the negative terminal faces the back. This is so you do not touch the frame with the positive terminals.

* Run your grounds as far from the positive terminal as you can. (See Picture.)

* Make sure you do NOT connect your Dimensions Inverter Temperature Probe to the positive terminal by mistake. It is suppose to connect to the negative terminal and I don't think it matters which one.

* I needed to add a copper bar so I can put all my positive leads on one battery post, but I have 400W of solar and a Keyline VSR (Battery Combiner). So you may not need to do this, but if you do you would order some copper bar stock... cut it... drill it... and install.

* All your battery interconnect cables NEED TO BE THE SAME LENGTH. I chose 9" with 5/16 lug holes. I ordered 3-red and 1-black on Amazon and I used welding cable since it is more flexible.

* I did not use the battery tie down hardware. Instead I shimmed the batteries with wood so they do not move around in the tray.

BobbyH,

We converted to four 6v deep cycle AGM batteries several years ago. Approx your weight. No problems with the drawer rollers.

However, being a belt and suspenders guy, we beefed up the welds and bracing of the drawer assy. Can't show the engineering math to support that, but are more comfortable on rough roads.

DO NOT use Rustoleum paints - from my experience they just do not last.

It is good advice to thoroughly clean & wirebrush the entire battery tray - inside and out. But after much consultation with restorers I ended up using POR-15 - 2 coats. This is referred to as a "coating". While it is like a paint the way to adheres to metal, and the way it self-levels is much different.

I did this in my 2005 Adventurer over 3 years ago, and it has not chipped, flaked or rusted through since. It is simply an amazing treatment which literally bonds itself to metal. And given it's location under the steps, and behind the front wheel you need something really tough there.

When I went through this 6 years ago on my 2001 Horizon I decided to rebuild the battery tray. The original had rusted through on the bottom. I contacted the manufacturer of the tray (it may of been Kwikee, but I'm not certain) and wasn't comfortable going to 250 lbs. I also didn't like the original slides. I ended up going to a local metal fabricator for a custom tray. This also gave me the ability to lower the tray slightly so I didn't need to trim off any material to get the batteries to fit.
