To cover or not to cover...

Our Itasca Cambria 26 is getting ready for Hibernation. Located in Holland MI where it snows quite a bit. Thought a full cover would be a good idea but don’t see many RV’s spending outdoors over winter that are covered. Looking for pro’s & con’s before spending the $400 for a cover.
Thanks!

I suggest you search the archives on this forum as well as RV.NET and IRV2.COM. I think you'll find the most common issues with covers are...

- scratching the RV body
- not holding up to the weather (rips, tears, etc)

we've owned 3 motorhomes since 1986 and have not covered any of them during the winter.

Just reviewed a handful of comments - 80% con for reasons I hadn’t considered. I’ll table the idea this season and see how it handles winter...
Thanks again

Anything that keeps water out also traps moisture. If you do cover, adequate ventilation is key. Fortunately we don't have snow here but I wonder if a cover would interfere with snow removal.

Show might just make removal trickier and then weight of snow on the cover pressing down on the antennas and other roof-top gear... re-thinking the idea.
Thanks!

The quality cover we bought was made by ADCO and advertised as "breathable". Last year in our Winnie's first time in winter storage, we put the cover on and it performed well. No ill effects at all from wind or snow. No abrasions on the coach finish. No damage to antennas, vent covers, or skylight. The only difficulty in removing it in spring was that there was some snow on it, so we had to take our time to remove the snow first then carefully ensure it wasn't snagged on anything or still frozen to the roof. The only significant problem was a couple of the tiedown strap tails were frozen into ice under the rig. Had to cut them to get the cover off. This year we got a storage spot in a paved lot with good drainage, but the spaces are a bit on the narrow side which would have complicated getting the cover on, so we decided to forgo it this winter. It also occurred to us that since the rig was a rental before we bought it, it had survived at least two winters quite nicely uncovered and still looked perfect when we got it, so why cover it now? Now if we were in the sunny south instead of Alaska, I wouldn't hesitate to use the cover. There is much more potential of damage from the sun that from snow and ice.

Thanks!
Well if you don’t cover in Alaska our rig should be OK in Holland, MI. It’s a 2008 and weathered winters pretty well without being covered ... besides we might want to trade up in a few years if this RV stuff works out.
Merry Christmas!

In spring I plan to do a thorough cleaning of the roof and then polish it good. Did the ends and sides last fall before putting it in storage. Sure is a lot of surface area but she shines like a new rig!

I did put a small cover on the A/C unit to keep ice and snow out of it. Just seemed to be a prudent thing to do.
