Struggling to remove wiper arm

Am trying to remove and spray paint our windshield wiper arms. Seems simple enough, remove two nuts and slide arms off the shaft. The smaller arm with the washer supply hose cooperates. The larger side will not budge (under pressure I am willing to apply until I have more knowledge).

Is that larger shaft a tapered press fit? Or is there a cross pin that needs to be removed? (Don't see one)

Anyone out there tackled this task before?

Wiper arm is a tapered fit with splines. Try to tap on the side of the arm at the shaft with a backup block on the opposite side.

Great! Thanks for the insight. Will revisit my dis-assembly and get those faded old arms painted so they do not detract from my newly painted mirrors.

Use a battery terminal puller or a small pulley or gear puller is the safest way to remove them without damage.

I know it may take a little brute force to remove those wipers if they are rusted in place, it's worth a minute to try and get a couple of drops of a rust buster....or even a little WD will help....leave it soak for a few minutes.
You can try putting a couple of pieces of wood, wedged them in place on opposite of the arm......remove the wiper arm nut and using a phillips head screwdriver, hit the wiper arm bolt dead center.....that might jar it loose.

Success! Thanks for all the tips. Removed, painted, re installed.

Wipers look great, mirrors look great, acres of fresh carnuba wax. Just noticed the ladder looks a little ratty.

Never ends.
