Stove top shattered

Was awakened in the middle of the night by the front section of the glass cover on our stove top shattering. Anyone have this experience? Hadn’t used the stove during the day and literally was sleeping when it happened.

Things like this can happen in brittle materials. There is a daily thermal cycle, and depending if the glass panel had a defect, or it was put in the holder and stressed too much. So going from cold to hot every day, even 30-40 degree temp differences, makes a big repeated stress on the item.

And finally it will fail catastrophically.

Not much to be done about it, get another bit of smoked glass and put it in the frame. Or order a new on from WB.

Actually thinking of replacing with a non-glass substitute...

Probably not a bad idea. Our glass foldable stove cover seems to be a problem in the making for me. Anything dropped from the cabinet above and it shatters. And keeping glass clean and spot free is another hassle. I think there are options, but they would need to be fireproof, just incase the burner gets turned on while the cover is down.
