I realize this is an older thread, just noticed it in the newsletter today.

I have recently started another thread on this topic at https://www.winnieowners.com/forums/...on-364890.html

I thought anyone reading this thread might find the ongoing discussion helpful, or at least interesting.

PS: It's a paint problem!

The untreated sheet metal was spray-painted on the interior of the storage compartments. (if it's galvanized at all, it was a minimal treatment, at best.)

The exterior of the bins are brown with rust, but intact... the problem starts with retained moisture under the interior paint skin. The bins are rotting from the INSIDE out.

Here are pictures ov the bottom of the rear cap on out 2011 Vista 26P. It’s where the rear bumper attaches.
I was installing hooks to attach the Protect a Tow and found there was nothing in there to screw to. It was all rotted away under the tin foil aluminum sheet they cover everything in.
I got poking around the rest of the lower skirt and found the aluminum sheet was rotted from the inside and the luan was rotted away.
I ended up cutting out all the rotted luan and glueing in new door skin material from lowes with construction adhesive and covering it with tar under coating.
I don’t have pictures of those repairs but here are some of the rear cap.

It's hard to find the words! I'll just say, "good work!"

Too bad Winnebago couldn't have made a little effort to build something more respectable. If you and I can glue it, and screw it together at home... they shouild be able to figure out something suitable in their factories.
