Rubber roof tear

Roof was good before I left Phoenix, but found a tear when I arrived in Alabama. Any suggestions on how to secure this are welcome.

My thought was to remove the antenna, and glue the rubber down with a contact adhesive, but how to keep water out in the the future is the question.

Do I buy a sheet of aluminum and secure it over the rip, then cover the edges and screws with dicor? Something else? I really do not want to rely on eternibond.

I would gently peel the rubber back and coat the plywood underneath liberally with Dicor. Do the same with the underside of the peeled back rubber so the Dicor fully coats both sides. Then fold the rubber back down, press down and rub back and forth with your hand to make sure that the Dicor is sealing well. Then weight down with wood sections and weights until the Dicor sets. Then put a bead of Dicor all around the tear joint.

Dicor has some adhesive properties, and you won't need much with your tear. It is a great sealant and that is what you mostly need.

Cleaned all of the old dicor and butyl off and let it dry.

Afterward, I used some adhesive to glue the rubber back down, and a roller to make sure it adhered.

Then I used some roof repair tape to cover the rips, and used the roller to press it down.

To put the antenna down, I put butyl tape on the bottom of it, and screwed it down to the roof.

Finally used self leveling Dicor to flash the edges.

It’s fine to use Dicor on “new” caulking projects on your roof. But remember to only use a silicone caulk on existing items caulked at the factory. Dicor will not stick to the factory caulking.

I know that I’ve used Dicor for a number of new caulking projects, i.e. solar panels and antennas, because it was easy to find, but now I have a roof of mixed caulking and only I know what’s what. It was probably not the best choice on my part.

I have used the factory masonry/guttercaulk as a sealant when needing a sealant elsewhere on the roof, but the factory used butyl putty here originally, so that is what I used.

I cleaned as much of the original material off as possible, and even then, the remaining residue was covered with the roof repair tape.

Yeah, I think you’re fine with this repair… I was just mentioning the mixed caulk roof situation.

Unfortunately for me, on the drive from Alabama to Arizona, the glue holding the rubber down to the plywood gave out between the antenna and front cap gave way, and now all of that roofing material is loose.

It's still sealed with the Eternabond tape though correct? Just the glue under the repair gave way and air flowing over the roof pulled up on the rubber membrane??? Yes?

Do you watch AZ Expert on YouTube? He's in your area and you can turn to him for advice and possibly for a repair. James seems pretty pro-active.

Correct, I cannot find any issues with the repair. The rubber is just loose.

I have reached out to James to see what his advice is.

This ended up being a insurance covered roof replacement. Paid my deductible and the guys at Cassones replaced the roof. They also installed some MaxxAir fans for me to replace the originals.

It was really disheartening to have to replace the roof over this. You can see from the pictures how minor it appears, but there is no way to fix it.
