roadside assistance insurance and tires

My wife and I just bought a 2011 Winnebago Vista 26p and we have two questions. First, who is a good insurance company for roadside/ towing assistance. Secondly, what is the best brand of tire to run on the Vista. Ours need to be replaced. Thank you for any assistance.

I use Good Sam ERS for roadside assistance. It's been worth the money to me.
No recommendation on tires, although I prefer Michelins wherever possible.

We already had AAA on a personal car so it was less the $100 to add RV shown below. Haven't had a need to use it on either.

I've been using Good Sam Roadside Assistance since 2014 and I've used them one time in Mountain Home, ID with good results. They cover everything you own that's on wheels for one price. Right now they are offering their plans for half price for new members. Check it out here: https://www.goodsamroadside.com/

I have been running 22.5 Sumitomos with no problems, but when I go to replace them I'll go with Toyos. Every one seems to be very happy with the ride, performance and price over everything else, including Michelins.

I have Good Sam Roadside Assistant and have for many, many years. I have used it 6 times over those years. Five for tires, one for out of gas. You will read or hear of many horrible experiences with GS. I have never had one and keep in mind most folks only post bad stuff not so much the good.

Remember these companies are there for assist not repairs. When choosing which one to go with look at the tow mileage offered and to where. I believe GS and maybe FMCA have the best mileage and to the best repair place.

have good sams for a few years, had to use them on the side of the road not far from home . they were very unknowable @ towers or repair shops in the area, thankfully I have a mobile diesel mechanic come and get us on the road , saving a 1400 dollar tow, after @ 2 months and many phone calls GS sent me a whopping 206 .00. so I saved them 1200 and cost me 500.00. read the contract

If you have a bigger rig, Coach Net, they always send the correct truck and trained professional. Our Journey was towed further away to the safest repair facility, Not the nearest.

As you probably know, tires are to be replaced after 7 to10 years. My RV had aged out tires. They were very nice, mid life Michelin tires. I hated replacing them.
The shop I use, and have known for years, recommended a relatively unknown, and much less expensive replacement tire.
The owner, an RV guy himself, said that most of us will age out our tires, rather than wear out the tires, and that high end Michelins wouldn't get used enough, for my limited use to be worth the expense.
I think he's right. But it is possible Michelins could ride softer though. I don't know. He said my replacements use a pretty hard - long life rubber.

I run Toyos and like them. I also use the road service FMCA sponsors.
Rick, what is the tire brand your shop is recommending?

I have GoodSam and have used them once for a broken fan belt. I was near Tampa on the day after Thanksgiving. They had a tow truck there in 1 hour. I paid nothing for the tow.

I use FMCA roadside program and purchase tires using the FMCA national account program. I have had to use the roadside assistance 3 times with excellant results. But Good Sam's roadside is/was on sale last week.

I had to go out and read the sidewalls. I have Ironman I 109 tires on there. I'm over 70, and remember when any tire of worth was built in the US. Toyo was one of the first that gained respect. Back then, tire people said Toyo had a soft rubber, so less wear, but a great carcass for retreading. I'm sure they've changed everything by now, but it was well liked anyway.

Here's The Blah Blah Blah stuff.
Ironman Tire Features
The unique tread compound offers superior handling and braking capabilities.
All steel construction evenly distributes acceleration and cornering for better wear.
Strong casing provides extended durability and strength.
5-rib design improves mileage and shoulder wear resistance.
Best suited for: Commercial Trucks.
Performance rating out of 10:
Tread Life: 7.8
Performance on dry surface: 7.7
Performance on wet surface: 8.1
Snow/ winter performance: 8.2
Fuel Efficiency: 8.2
Noise: 7.8
Traction: 7.7

Check with your current motor home insurance carrier for your towing and roadside coverage. Usually for a very small additional premium they can add that to your coverage.

I've used Good Sam RSA for six years and have had to call on them twice. Once, they had to find a tire and send someone out to install it. The other time, they found someone to tow the motorhome and towed it to a repair facility. In both cases, they performed as advertised.

I have Geico insurance which includes roadside assistance for both my tow car and RV. I had to use roadside assistance for a tow this past summer on my Vista and they were very helpful and no extra charges. We have used Geico for many years (we also had a 2007 Roadtrek that was towed several times!) and we have never had any issues.

I have had State Farm's roadside assistance and it was horrible. Seems they farm this out to some other company whose staff can't read maps, and has limited ability to do anything to help you out!

Keep in mind that NONE of the Roadside Assistance companies/coverages actually come out and do the repair/tow. They only contract with towing companies in the area you happen to be in when you need them, so the level of service and expertise can vary quite a bit. You will find plenty of both good and bad stories/accounts for every RSA provider out there; Good Sam, AAA, Coachnet, etc.
