Propane fill valve leaking

We arrived at our work camping location yesterday and stopped out front to top off the LP in our MH. When the person filling the tank attempted to disconnect, the propane started pouring out. He was able to reset the valve with a screw driver. We then went into town (Rapid City, SD) and purchased a brass safety valve. We are told we should replace the valve that leaked. So, a few questions:

1) How common a failure is this?
2) Would you replace it or see if it happens again?
3) Where would I purchase a replacement. (want to compare prices)

Thanks!

Sometimes they stick and they are ok but it never hurts to replace.

Places with LP fittings can do it, or RV repair facilities could do it to. I know we keep those and can replace them.

Not quite sure what the service tech did but it almost sounds like the valve did what its supposed to do if the tank is overfilled......the valves can be reset with a screwdriver but they do make a plastic tool for this purpose, basically a plastic threaded insert with a small blunted point on the end to reset the valve...i carry the tool in our tool box

If the valve is working like it should then it stops filling when 80% full.

We have a 2005 Winnie Adventurer 37B and your tank valve may be the same as ours. We have a vent valve that is located at the 80% level in the tank, and this is used to indicate a full tank when the liquid starts coming out, not an automatic fill cut-off. Your main fill fitting has a spring loaded valve in it that seals when the filling valve is disconnected. Sounds like it didn't seat. You can check it with a little soapy water. Not sure how much a replacement valve assembly costs, but there are male/female fittings that can just be screwed on that have the same internal valve. Check the bar-b-que area of Lowes or Home Depot. Cheap quick repair until your tank is empty if you are a do-it-yourselfer.
