Portable AC

We are having trouble with our 2003 Winnebago Adventurer AC. It has the basement AC. We had a mechanic come out and look at it and he thinks it’s basically dying. We don’t have the ability right now to replace it because we are traveling — and some parts are back ordered - so we are trying to figure out a temporary fix. We see that there are some portable AC units that might work but we are concerned that they use too much power. Can anyone give us any tips about this? How much power can we use without causing a meltdown in our wiring? We usually plug into 30 amp RV parks. Any help is appreciated!!!

I assume you are thinking about installing a window unit temporarily. Window units typically draw about 1 amp per 1,000 btu/hr of capacity. So a 10,000 btu unit will draw 10 amps.

You should be fine up to a 15,000 btu/hr unit.

These threads will help you with your decision:

I ADDED A 8,000 BTU Portable AC To My 2004 Itasca Horizon 40AD

This unit draws only 8A on high.

If you need a portable AC just to get you through the summer, then buy at least a 12,000 BTU unit. Just make sure it takes a standard wall socket plug.

And here's some more information on taking your RV to Rocky Rocky Point, MX (Puerto Penasco). I call it an RV DAY SPA, because you can get all the services you need for your RV in one place. Just be sure to bring all your parts and specialty tools with you.

FIXING YOUR BASEMENT AC

Search for recent posts on how to do this. You can find capacitors in every major town. What sort of basement AC trouble are you having?

OP: How are you making out with your portable AC project? What did you do?
