No Power

Help! Went camping and planned to go for a few months, Two days ago pulled into a campsite in Florence SC. After setting up I went to plug in the 30 amp. power cord and "Bam" it shorted out burning the plug. Apparently a short in my wire, ( I can't prove that). So I cut off the plug, replaced it and nothing. I have a 2004 30" Winnebago Itasca. Checked fuse panel by steps and all seemed fine. So I tried the generator, it started and everything worked. Is there something i'm missing, hidden breaker etc. We have no service nearby except camping-world in Ft. Myers and everyone says stay clear. Your help would be greatly appreciated, Chuck:

Check your transfer switch. If everything works fine on generator power it sounds like your problem is at or before the transfer switch. First check for incoming power on your shore power lines. If you have power to but not out of the transfer switch the switch is bad.

The power cord connects to a transfer switch. That is what selects land power and generator power. It is electrically before the main breaker panel

It seems common for the wiring in it to burn up from loose connections. If they came loose, they could have caused the short and now the open circuit.

Some are right on the circuit breaker panel enclosure. With power off, start looking around there. The power cord should go right to it.

Hello- I am a new member, just stumbled on this thread and wondered how I might contribute to a more robust solution for this and other similar threads. The answer that the problem is at the "transfer switch" seems a little sparse to me because if you have no idea what the transfer switch is or where it is, you are as nonplussed as you were before you read the post. I realize that this is a common limitation of this kind of group exchange of information, if anyone out there has an idea, please, it could help here. I would say if you're going to run down power problems, you should have the schematic and hopefully have the time to try to guess where the next stop for your circuit is located in your monster, and some idea of how to get to it with voltmeter probes. Also, you may be able to look at a wire color code and hopefully find that same insulation jacket cover color at that next terminal.
Just last week it took me some time to find out that I had to plug my pigtail into a socket inside my power/sewer hatch to run my AC on the generator. The Winnebago stuff I got with my unit for my year is almost useless.

First you need to replace the whole Power cord. It also sounds like your Transfer Switch is Toast so it will most likely need replacing also.
I would also recommend installing a Surge protector/Line checker while doing it. You can get one that is incorporated into the Transfer Switch.
They are easy to install if you have the correct tools, but please be careful and remember Safety first so power down everything, Generator, before starting.

Thanks to all who have responded to my electrical problem. Little too old to crawl in location to fix transfer switch, so found RV Doctor in Ft Myers which has a great rating and even though can't work on it till friday, I can park in their secure lot. They will check it out, give estimate, and they repair anything and everything on all types of motor homes, lg and Sm. Check them out. Thanks again, Chuck:

There is a recall notice for loose connections in the transfer switch for my 2016 Vista 30T. When I had it implemented, wires were burnt due to the loose connections. Winnebago told them to trim the ends of the wires and reconnect.

From all the info I received from club members, which I appreciate, it does point to the transfer switch. Around $200 for the switch and will be interesting what the labor will be. I would have tackled it myself but being in the location it is, I'm not that flexible any more. Winnebago should have located it in a more acceptable location as it seems to be a common problem. Same with cars today. Have to take apart half the vehicle to get to something we can all repair. Is there a reason behind that, I have my thoughts. Thanks again members. Chuck:

I didn't see where we verified if the campground outlet still had power. Short that large could have tripped campground breakers.

Where was the transfer switch located?

They're all usually in a basement bay near where the power chord enters the coach.

Don't leave home without your electric testing meter
