I use Mercedes filters and Moly oil. Beware the difference between Liters and Quarts. Also some sites who sell oil don't make oil recommendations based on the latest Mercedes bulletins. I always check for a newer bulletin before making purchases.

What I don't change myself is the fuel filter. Accessing the fuel filter is a challenge on my Via.

Good warning. I believe the Mobil ESP is available in both measurements and the bottle size difference is not something you would necessarily notice. It's not a huge difference though, being only about a half a quart difference at the 9 liter quantity, but still something to be avoided.

I use mobil 1 synthetic European formula 0-40. Mercedes is where to get the filter as some aftermarket filters are cardboard that disintegrates. The filter on my 2004 was different than what the serial number on my sprinter stated so that is why it is best to go to Mercedes on the filter. Recently Mercedes has switched to 5-30 weight. The dealers use Mobile 1 as their oil. Change oil every 10,000 and the diesel filter every 20,000 is what the mechanic at Mercedes told me. My 2016 View sprinter is every 20,000 for oil change.

I really appreciate the share on this!
The oil analysis was very good information and is a good reminder that it's not always about the mileage on the engine, but also the conditions you drive through (hot, dusty versus wet, cold) and how hard the engine is working as that odometer turns.

What about the DPF monitor he speaks of on his blog? I tried to Google it but came up empty. I would love to be able to monitor the regens like I do on my TDI, I can't see any good coming from shutting down a turbo and DPF at 1200-1500 degrees EGTs.

PS I tried to PM you about an old thread where you mentioned Sumo Solos but I could not respond the the thread (too old) and I don't see any PM options.

Gas and diesel engines were significantly changed for 2017 and so were the motor oil specifications. The newer engines have tighter tolerances and the oil film is thinner as in 0W when cold and diesel puts even more stress on the oil.

I will be using Mobile 1 ESP 0W-30 in my new RV and changing it based on the DIC as it takes into account the trip duration and driving patterns in determining when to change the oil.

Two RV's that travel 5,000 miles, if in rural areas and sightseeing might entail 166 hours of engine use and if driving mostly on the interstates that could entail only 100 hours of engine operation. It is why diesel vehicles should provide engine hours operation and the ones I have had provided this.

I changed my oil when I FIRST got my Vita Mercedes chassis, glad I did because the oil filter had some of the break in metal from manufacturing. Piece of mine instead of waiting 20k miles. No matter how these folks change these engine,they still have the wear of normal mechanical things.

There is no way I am doing 20K OCI. I think a big part of that is EPA. I would consider dragging 11K of motorhome around as constituting "Sever Duty" as Mercedes calls it. Not to mention interrupted regens dumping fuel into the cylinders and past the rings into the oil.

The desire to lengthen change intervals is largely being pushed by the fleet vehicle operators. When Hertz has a car in the shop having the oil changed it is not available to rent and the company loses money. This is even more the case with a big rig operation with its Cummins or Kenworth trucks that cost them far more for being out of service than from the cost of the oil.

The engine manufacturers for the big rigs are now providing change intervals of 20,000 miles and working to get to 40,000 miles between changes by doing periodic sampling of the motor oil.

Times change but many people seem unable to change as well. My first cars that burned leaded gas needed the spark plugs changed every 10,000 miles but with every after lead was removed could go 100,000 miles between plug changes. Engine materials have advanced a great deal over the past half century and my truck's engine runs at 4000+ RPMs in its normal operating range. Most gas engines do not reach peak horsepower until they are at at least 3400 RPMs and engines last 3 times as long today as they did 40 years ago.
