Not sure I trust the little air flow device completely so would like to visually check my air filter. For other Journey owners, how difficult is it to remove the thing?

I had mine done while on a trip back from Fl in the spring at a Freightliner service shop near Ashland Va cost was $400+. 3 Hrs labor. I was told they had to lower the exhaust to get it out. Since then I have had others look at it and was told it looks like a simple job, of course they were not FL mechanics. My sight glass was just starting to lift from the bottom, the pressure was up slightly. Milage was about 19K

Well, I can believe the 3 hours labor. I spent one hour on my back last evening and only got one end loose (along with a face full of dirt and grime). The clamps have stainless straps but the nuts and threads are not stainless and were rusted fast. Soaked everything with PBlaster and will resume the struggle this evening.

For anyone with a 36G, once you have the ducts disconnected from the cannister, looks like the cannister has to be moved forward before you can lower it?? Mine looks like it will clear the muffler but not sure.

Mine would not clear the muffler so I removed it from above from under the bed. Was easy.

RKL:

Round 2: got the clamps off the cannister and cannister is free. However, it won't clear the muffler/tailpipe. I was in the process of removing the tailpipe when a storm came up so I quit for the evening. I could see the filter element and it was pretty dirty. My rig has 33,000 miles.

Frank, I looked up and I did not think I could reach the cannister from under the bed. However, I will try that before messing more with the exhaust components.

For sure, FL and/or Winnebago did not consider maintenance when they put this thing where it is.

On our '03 Journey DL, it wasn't bad at all, took me maybe 20 minutes. Kind of a tight fit but it went OK. 3 hours in a shop with a lift?????? Tell ya what, get the new filter and bring it over and I'll do it for $100.00 plus beer.

Yup, from the bottom. Take both bolts out of the brackets that clamp it on, loosen clamps that hold the boots to the pipes and the filter, both ends and yank it out. You should be taking out not only the filter but also boot(s). Use a tool such as a cotter key remover to loosen the boot's grip on the filter and pipes. Installation is reverse of removal. Back it over a low spot in the yard if you need a little more room to work. No need to disturb exhaust or anything else under there. Our is a Journey DL with Cat 3126 330 HP.

Here is what finally worked for me:

1. loosen clamps on boots (tough since mine were rusted pretty badly).
2. once the cannister was 'free' I stood it on its end and set it on top of the muffler.
3. went inside under bed, removed the lowest engine cover and pulled the cannister up through the opening.

It was no way the filter was going to clear my muffler/tailpipe.

Was surprised at price variation on replacement...$128.50 for Hastings (local auto parts store), $115 for Wix (local auto parts store), $82.50 for exact replacement at FL dealer. Was surprised that FL would be the lowest price.

Cover toward the front. Also, if you have the same clamps as mine, you will need a 11mm deep socket for the nut. Mine would not budge until I soaked them with PBlaster. Be prepared to look like you have been working in a coal mine when you come up for air. One of my neighbors asked me if I removed the filter with my face....LOL

After all is said and done, what is the maximum number of miles you would go before changing the air filter? I know what the book says.
Isn't it amazing how the coaches differ from year to year and model to model? Good Miles

Just changed out my filter last night on a 2001 Horizon 36CD w/ 330 Cat 3126B. It was a booger, but spent about 2 hours getting it done. Believe I can get it done quicker next time.

Before removing the quick clamps that hold the filter on, I removed the front boot, the elbow from the bottom, and the extension that goes into the boot that goes up the back corner of the coach to the fresh air intake. Like the others, one of the biggest problems was loosening the bolt clamps at the boots. Bolts were rusted badly, and were a bear to get off.

Before removing the old filter, make a mental note of the angle of the intake side. Loosen and disconnect the clamps holding the filter and slide toward the rear of the unit. Takes a little work, but by moving mine back and forth and setting it on it's end, I was able to get it out around the muffler.

My guess is second time around will take about an hour. But I will go to the car wash and clean it well before starting next time!

My air cleaner indicator was about half way up. I have 42,000 miles on the coach, and the filter was due for a change, in my opinion. Hard to see the whole filter, but can only see in the intake hole of the filter. Of course, that will always be the dirtiest part of the filter.

It can be done, just takes a lot of patience, and a lot of soap to clean up afterwards!
