Fastening Dash Pod Panels

Had to disassemble the dash on my 2003 Itasca to chase electrical gremlins and found that a portion of the ship-lapped dash is supposed to be held together with double stick body moulding tape but could not find one sticky enough to hold it together. Any suggestions short of putting a screw through it?

Don't recall the product name, but I bought some double sided tape specifically designed for auto body panels at Merrigan's and used it to adhere (what else?) panels on our Journey. Comes in 100ft rolls, but if you put on your saddest face they might sell you a few feet.

I get into our instrument panel cowling often. Our cowling is held by interlocking (shiplap) and several screws. Screws are easy.

If you go with the tape, be advised, consider it permanently bonded.

Thank you! Screws are definitely easy, but ugly

Ugly? So judgemental.

Think of it as "Embracing the sublime beauty of utilitarianism".

Commercial grade Velcro would hold it, might be to thick for flat smooth fit. Medium strength would probable work. Or just a thin strip of 100% silicone sealer clamped till dry and could still separate at a later date.

Thank you! Silicone seems to be the easiest and least destructive. By sealer, do you mean caulk?

Body molding tape

You can buy 3M body molding tape at most auto parts stores in short rolls, similar to the Scotch product mentioned above in a previous post. It might be the same tape, just packaged for household use.

Screws can look "original" if you pre-paint the heads and are careful not to twist the leather-like veneer. I used them when tidying up the finish of my overhead where I replaced the Zeppelin anchor TV withe a flat screen.

I used my finger to put a small rub of WD-40 beforehand on the spot where the screw was going to keep the veneer from bunching/twisting as I tightened the screw. Nobody has noticed the screws yet, or maybe they're all just too polite to say so. Good luck.

Some cauking has a strong glue in it. Silicone. Is the one that dries like rubber it can move a little so it will not break loose while moving. Just a thin line.

Just to clarify, you are talking about silicone caulk? Is there a silicone sealer?

I might consider contact cement but a bit more difficult to apply as it tends to run down and I would want to mask off below to control where it might move. Somewhat stronger grip and would need to be sliced loose to remove in the future but will make a good solid joint for now.

Chose the Silicone route and was quite pleased with the outcome. A little tricky to figure out the best way to clamp to get even pressure on it. Only had to treat the vertical joint on the lower piece.
