There was no way to slip metal flashing or anything like that under the hole, and we didn't think we could do a good job over the fiberglass exterior because the lump caused by the tree branch would force one or both sides to stick out. It's not as strong as it could be, but it's nearly as strong as the styrofoam and aging luan was before the accident.

Thanks everyone for your help. It was a difficult choice.

Why didn't I think to suggest the expanding foam (Great Stuff) to fill in the hole. I have used it in the past, just not for a repair like this.

Excellent work Igehring. And thank for coming back with the info on what your fix was.

Now you're an expert and can advise the next poster with a similar question.

Thinking more about the use of the expanding foam for a fix:
-- Fill the hole with foam.
-- Dig out the foam to about 1/8" below the surface of the wall
-- Dig out the foam from under the wall to about 3/4" back from the edge of the hole.
-- Do your best to be sure the luan wood side of the wall is as clean as possible so the resin will adhere to the wood.
-- Take 2-3 pieces of fiberglass cloth cut to about 1" larger than the hole, and then work them under the edge of the wall and cover liberally with resin.
-- Sand smooth and then use bondo to fill in the imperfections in the patch.
