Cleaning / Detail

With all my stay-at-home time I thought I would do some detail work. The Navion Sprinter with the full body paint has some sort of protective film applied to the front of the hood ( I guess for rocks and bugs ?). Mine has developed some yellowing and spots. Has anyone had any luck cleaning this film ? The rest of the body paint is in perfect condition as the original owner took good care of the unit.

Thanks

No, not yet. I would imagine it could be replaced. I have some slight bubbling along one edge, but it seems stable, so I'm not doing anything about it.

From watching people with this, I'd guess you're at 4-5+ years with it on. The fix is a complete removal/ reinstall or just leave it off. There isn't a way to save it and from what I'm seeing it doesn't get better.
I had some on a car we had and left it too long. When I finally removed it the paint below was ruined. I put it on to protect the paint and in the end it cost me 2x to have the paint fixed.

Thank all, I suspect that might be the case.

There is a company that does this removal called Ugly Shield in Fort Myers, Florida.

They have YouTube videos on the removal and there are lots of amateur videos of the process on YouTube, as well. Seems to be two kinds, Diamond Shield and 3M. I don't know what WBGO uses. But it seems the two kinds have slightly different removal processes.

Winnebago used Diamond Shield on my 2017 Adventurer. So far I’ve had good luck with it but we live in relatively a dry climate. Good luck with the removal. I’m not sure I would replace if I had to remove.

thanks for that info.. I think at this point i may just learn to live with it. It may fall into the category of "only I notice it"

Several years ago, we removed the 3M film on the front of our coach and the various decals on the sides and back. A bear to do, but doable. We paid a local guy to paint the decal scheme back on (less Winnebago specific decals).

As the 3M came off it revealed a number of divots that had been held in place by the film. We epoxied those and repainted the entire front cap. Almost easier done than said. We flirted with replacing the film, but the quotes were north of $1K. Automotive paint (1 qt) and clearcoat (2 qt) was less than $60. I already had the HVLP paint sprayer, but a new one is approx $129 at HF. Our guy would have prepped and shot the cap for $500.

So our coach has had several years of highways and byways, the latter with their share of gravel and fast moving 4x4's. So far there are no chips noticeable unless you are washing n waxing.

We believe it is cost effective to forgo film replacement, and make a decision to repaint the cap, or not, when we sell.
