carpet protection covering

dealer put carpet protection covering that says dealer must remove. they did not. we made the mistake of leaving it on for 6 months, now it is very difficult to remove.
any suggestions?
can i use a heat gun?

Carpet Protection Film has about a 45 day maximum service life, and as you have found, it tends to meld with the carpet over time. Yes, I would try a heat gun, and be sure to pull back (not up) to peel the stuff off. Good luck.

There are two kinds of film - one with water based adhesive, that kind can be removed with warm water, worst case with a steam cleaner. If a solvent based adhesive film was used, then that kind can be removed with a citrus based cleaner, diluted per label instructions.

I'm not sure dry heat alone is going to release either kind of adhesive and even if it lets you get the film off you'll have adhesive residue left that will make it difficult to keep the carpet from attracting a lot of dirt and debris.

Be careful if you go the heat gun route - it can output heated air at temp of 1000 to 1400 degrees F. Some kinds of carpet will melt at temps as low as 200 - 300 F !

Good question. I have a 2006 Sunova with the same carpet protection on. I left it in place around the dog house and haven't tried to remove it yet. I suppose I will try using warm water. If that doesn't work I'll contact the dealer for advice. I didn't know it could be a problem if left on too long.

I would suggest a hair dryer before the heat gun. Less chance of damage. I have used a hair dryer to remove decals on vehicles successfully.

Yes use a hair dryer or a steam iron with a damp cloth between it and the film or perhaps a steam mop. You may want to call the dealer and ask how they remove the particular film they use when its been left on too long.

Note that even painters tape is only guaranteed to be easily/cleanly removable for 5, 7, 14 or 60 days depending on which formulation you purchase however extremes in temperature, etc can reduce those times substantially especially on surfaces where the finish beneath the tape has not cured sufficiently.
