Basement doors need to open wider

I have a 2005 Adventurer. The basement doors open upward (in your face). I realize those with a slide above have to be limited, but has anyone added gas shock type units to hold them open. The one that bugs me most is next to the coach door. It opens to about flat and is held there by a cable. Can I put a shock or two there and if so what size. I don't want to have to almost crawl in...

It depends on the weight and size. You also have to be careful how you mount it to the door. The gas shocks put a lot of pressure on the door and hinge. It could break the door if it is not reinfoced. I would put 2 instead of one. Distribute the force and stress on the door more equally. I have found the people here to be very helpful.

One of our basement doors opens like yours, it has a rod that holds it open but its way too short.....someday I will make a new rod to extend the opening

I don't know what brand they are but our Sportscoach compartments have gas shocks that have two stopping points. When you open the compartment the door opens to horizontal so it doesn't hit the slide and stops. If the slide is closed you can then push the door up and it stops at a up angle that makes access a lot easier.

I have that issue with our '99 Trop I Cal so instead of investing in new gas struts, I cut the appropriate length PVC, notched it to "hold" on the lock and store it in the very front of the compartment. When we open it, just grab the pipe, set it in place and away you go!

Same coach
I just unhook the cable and the strut is strong enough and long enough to hold the door all the way up. Have you tried unhooking the cable?
Obvious warning, make sure the door is closed before putting the slide out.

If you add add gas struts make sure they are not to long because you want be able to close your doors. Gerald

X2 on my '06 Itasca Sunrise 35A. But, I normally have the slide in if I'm going to open up the doors all the way. The cable unhooks at the door.

My previous coach's bin doors would open fully and lay nearly flat against the side of the coach - a simple clip would hold them there. Did not realize how great this was until I got a coach that the doors open not fully...

Thanks for all the input. I am going to start by disconnecting the cable....and see what happens. With the slide in of course.
