Also what do you mean when you say "gone out"? Does it leak, stop airflow or what is the problem? I don't know of anybody who has ever had to have one rebuilt but it is much like a radiator core and they are rebuilt as a worst case for getting old cars restored. Part of the reason for asking is that it can be easy for a tech to say the core has gone due to a leak but it can also be as simple as a break where the tubing connects and only need a solder job.
Main question might be if they actually took it out and looked or if they only decided it was bad because the gas is gone?
Techs are there for much the same reason the rest of us go to work. They want to make money and it's not always doing the best job that makes the most money.
