View 24D Towable Question

I have a 2019 View 24D on a MB Sprinter . I am wanting to purchase a smaller pickup truck to use at home and to tow when traveling . Any suggestions on the best small pickup for towing . I do not want another F-150 size but do like Ford products . We are open for any small trucks 4X4 that will work for doing both . Thanks in advance for your recommendations .

The View can tow about 4000 lbs max. I tow a 17 Ford Fiesta four down. Your pickup idea is too heavy in my opinion.

I have also wanted a small truck but find there are no longer any made for this country. What is now called small is what used to be the big! Looking at chairs in furniture stores will give the idea, You can't get that size rear end into a small truck anymore.

How about an old mid-size 4x4 with a manual transfer case that could easily be put into neutral? They would be lighter than a newer truck, and the electronic transfer case on my 2019 Chevy has a rather complicated process for going into neutral. It's also about as big as a full size truck from 20 years ago.

You are outta luck for any current model Pickup from any manufacturer selling in the US today. However, Ford, VW and Hyundai all plan to market compact, car based pickups in the next year or so.

The Nissan Frontier is the smallest and lightest available right now. The base model 2-wheel drive weighs 3750 lbs.

Given how old that design is, it fits right in with my advice to buy an old mid-size truck.

I had a little pickup years back and loved it for what I was doing but eventually the floor rusted totally away and about the time I decided it HAD to be fixed, my wife let a bus turn left in front of her! I've looked ever since for something to replace it and none are as nice size.

My 2016 View Mercedes Sprinter has a 5000 lb. Max towing capacity. I tow a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk at about 4200 lbs. Just went on a 1200 mile trip that included some really steep grades and it did just fine.

I have a 2018 Navion 24V. I researched the towable vehicle situation. The weight limit is 5000 Lbs. on the hitch. I found no small truck who is under the 4000 Lbs. GVW
From my research: Cars with Manuel transmission Fiesta, Sonic or Fit are under 3000 lbs. GVW
I bought a two door Jeep Rubicon and it is 3900 lbs. We talked to a Illinois Full Time camper with a 2016 View in 2019. He claimed the two door Jeep offers you Off Road and On Road options. An compromise they use is to disconnect Jeep on heavy mountainous grades and wife drive it independently over the grade to level ground.

Honda CRV 2014 and older

I tow a 2014 CRV behind my 2017 View 24g on a 2016 Sprinter 3500 chassis and have to check the rear camera on occasion to see if it’s still back there. Light and lots of storage space.

2004 Toyota Tacoma 4wd with manual transmission

Here's what I tow with my 2017 View V. It matches all of your wishes.

2004 (or older) Toyota Tacoma 4WD with manual transmission

The older Tacomas with manual transmissions also have manual transfer cases. Put the xfer case and transmission in neutral and go. Automatic transmission Tacomas are NOT flat towable.

Both Roadmaster and Blue OX sell baseplate kits for the Tacoma.
I had a custom front bumper made by Shrockworks in Houston. This is a heavy duty off road bumper that I had them add Roadmaster tow points welded to the bumper.

The 4WD Tacoma only weighs about 3500 lbs. Newer Tacomas weight a lot more and are NOT flat towable. They have electric transfer cases.
I have towed my Tacoma about 20,000 miles so far.

I have researched this quite a bit before I bought the Tacoma. Your local Toyota dealer may say that it is not flat towable. I have communicated with at least 3 other owners that tow the older Tacomas. I have also talked to several transmission experts that say tow it. Remco lists it as towable with no modifications.

These Tacomas last forever. It's common to see them with 200K to 300K miles. Mine only has 155K. For their age, they are not cheap. Make sure it has good maintenance records and it had the timing belt replaced. It's pricey to change. It's also not a show stopper, since the engine does not blow up if the belt breaks.

Good luck in your search.

Regards,
Jerry

You may want to re-think the F150. Due to the use of a aluminum body the F150 may weigh only slightly more than some of the smaller pickup trucks, and you get the full size with the F150. I've compared the weight if the F150 to the Ranger, Colorado, Wrangler etc and found the F150 about the same weight.

Some good info here, particularly the Toyota Tacoma info above. I am not an expert by any means, but I do read a lot. So here is my 2 cents. The View/Navion are advertised to be able to tow 5000 lbs. however in reality you you cannot really tow 5000 lbs, unless you are overweight. It’s all depends on how much weight is added to the unit(all your stuff). You have to look at your GVWR and GCWR to really know. And you should have your Unit weighed once packed and ready to travel. And look at the towing guides that are published to see what vehicles are ok to tow four wheels down. The complete towing package that is needed to flat tow also adds weight and would be added to the tow vehicle weight for and accurate weight.
