Toad question - Chevrolet Equinox?

Anyone use a Chevrolet Equinox as a Toad? The manual says it is flat towable at speeds up to 65 mph? Anyone with experience pulling an Equinox? Thanks.

I just returned from a trip with a 2019 Equinox to and from Florida, from Pennsylvania. I own a 2019 Sunstar 29VE and installed a Roadmaster Falcon Towbar last fall, along with the Invisibrake. All systems worked well. The total connection can be made in less than five minutes.

Thanks for the reply. Equinox seems great but if I want one with a hitch I have to go used. They no longer offer one on the 2021’s.

We finished a 5,000 mile trip recently flat towing a 2020 Chevy Equinox (AWD, 2.0T). Tows like a dream. Never exceeded 65 MPH, so kind of a pain when speed limit is 75 in parts of the western U.S. I'm learning to be patient...

Used recommended Roadmaster base plates and Nighthawk tow bar along with Stay-and-Play Duo braking system. Takes about 5 minutes to connect or disconnect. Just follow Chevy manual instructions and you shouldn't have any problems. Check it out along with install videos and reviews at eTrailer.com.

Here's the checklist I use for connecting and disconnecting.

Connect Car Checklist
  • OUTSIDE CAR: Remove tow bar cover and stow.
  • Confirm the tow bar and safety cables are secured to the motorhome.
  • Position the tow bar arms horizontal in a V, fully in, adapters pointed down.
  • INSIDE CAR: Start engine. Using front camera, guide the car forward until bar adapters are close to car. Keep the engine RUNNING for at least FOUR minutes.
  • Put the transmission into Park. Set Parking Brake. PARK will appear on the dash.
  • Engage and confirm that AWD is turned ON. Shift to N (neutral).
  • Turn off headlights and all accessories.
  • Turn the Stay-IN-Play toggle switch to ON (flip to the right).
  • OUTSIDE CAR: Insert and lock car base plate front arms to car
  • Connect the tow bar adapters to the car arms. Install and secure pins or locks.
  • Connect the safety cables to the car.
  • Plug in the 7-pin umbilical cord.
  • Connect the breakaway cable to the motorhome and to the car.
  • Pull the breakaway pin to test. Confirm you hear the vacuum pump start up and see the red lights on the windshield illuminate. Re-insert the pin fully.
  • INSIDE CAR: Turn engine OFF after at least four minutes of operation.
  • Tap the Start/Stop button once with foot OFF the brake pedal.
  • An AMBER light will appear on the button.
  • Chime sounds for 30 minutes. Ignore chime and message.
  • Leave transmission in Neutral.
  • Disengage Parking Brake. WARNING: Car may roll in neutral!
  • Lock car doors using the key fob.
  • OUTSIDE CAR: Move car backwards slightly to lock at least one tow bar arm.
  • If one arm will not lock, turn the car's steering wheel 1/2 turn in the direction of the unlocked arm. As the MH pulls forward the arm will lock.
  • Test the car's brake lights, turn signals, and flashers from MH.
  • COMPLETE: As the MH pulls away, confirm that all tires roll and that both arms are locked. If necessary, do gentle “S” turns until both arms are locked.

Disconnect Car Checklist
  • INSIDE CAR: Set Parking Brake. PARK will appear in red on the dash.
  • Put the transmission into Park. The Start/Stop button will turn off.
  • Turn the Stay-IN-Play toggle switch to OFF (flip to left).
  • Start car engine and run for at least FOUR minutes.
  • Turn AWD Off.
  • Turn the car's display on.
  • Turn engine OFF AFTER completing OUTSIDE CAR steps below.
  • Lock car doors using the key fob.
  • OUTSIDE CAR: Disconnect the umbilical cord from the car.
  • Disconnect the safety cables from the car.
  • Disconnect the breakaway cable from the car.
  • Disconnect the tow bar from the car and stow.
  • Remove car base plate front arms and stow.
  • Install rubber caps into the front arm bar holes of car.
  • Install the tow bar cover.

AT LUNCH or GAS STOPS
  • Check all connections.
  • Put the transmission into Park. PARK will appear on the dash.
  • Start car engine and run for at least FOUR minutes.
  • Engage and confirm that AWD is turned ON. Shift to N (neutral)
  • Turn engine OFF after at least four minutes of operation
  • Tap the Start/Stop button once with foot OFF the brake pedal. An AMBER light will appear on the button.
  • Chime sounds for 30 minutes. Ignore chime and message.
  • Leave transmission in Neutral. Turn off headlights and all accessories.
  • Lock car doors using the key fob.

Take a look at the Buick Envision. No tow restrictions. I have over 6k towing miles on our 2020. Wonderful tow.

The Equinox is a great choice for a toad. Chevrolet makes the owner's manuals available on their website and each manual includes detailed info on which models are flat towable and the instructions. I have rented one twice to test the vehicle which I fell in love with.
It's also a nice price compared to other more expensive vehicles out there. Maybe a hitch can be installed after market if the manufacturer doesn't offer that option anymore. (I am sticking with my Honda CRV a bit longer but ready to pull the trigger on an Equinox when the time comes.)

In three and a half years we've towed our 2014 Equinox AWD 32K miles. Our manual says to start the engine and shift between drive and reverse every 300 miles to circulate fluids. I installed a switch for the fuse that is to be removed while towing too. No problems so far. I did install a 2" hitch on it for the bicycle rack and carried our Treks the same distance, it would be a shame if you couldn't get a hitch anymore, etrailer.com maybe ?
