Raised the Cargo Carrier

This is our new set up for using a cargo carrier with a Blue Ox tow bar. Up until now I couldn’t use the cargo carrier as it was too low and would hit the hood of the car on turns. (I never had a mishap, as I measured before I tried). I searched the net extensively before I had a welding shop make this for me.

I hope you don't load it up too much. I've long since forgotten the equations for analyzing these things but it seems like the additional torque you're exerting on your hitch would be substantial.

Hi Bob,
Oh wow Bob; you raise a very good point. I just figured the car is not a vertical load, but who knows how much is loaded into the cargo carrier. Here is how you calculate the maximum load:
Assumptions:
Maximum allowed vertical load at the standard hitch ball location = 500 Lb
Horizontal distance from the motorhome's receiver tube to the standard hitch ball = 10" (a guess)
Horizontal distance from the motorhome's receiver tube to the centerline of the cargo carrier = 50" (guess)
Principle:
The summation of forces around an anchor point is zero.
Calculation:
(500 Lb × 10") - (X Lb × 50") = 0
X = 100 Lb
Hi CarpeDiem,
Please measure these distances and please let us know what they are, OK?
Thanks, Eagle5

Wow, I was ok in high school physics but you guys have gone to a whole new level. And physics class was about 50 years ago. Can’t go measure right now but I do know it’s rated for 500 lbs and the overall weight is ~3850 and about 100 of that is the cargo carrier loaded.

Update

An update on my original post from November 2021. I never did try to do the math that was helpfully suggested. We have been using the extension since then with no problem. The only thing I’ve done is painted it. So no weight or torque issues. A tribute to the welder who did the work.
