How to figure Tongue Weight?

I can't seem to find an answer to this. Should the hitch weight be added to the tongue weight? For example, if the TT tongue weight is 500 and the WDH is 100, is my effective tongue weight 600? thanks

Hi Jokaj,
As I understand it, the trailer coupler weight provides the damping force for anti-sway, so I would not include the weight distribution hitch (WDH) in your trailer ball load calculation.

Well I would add the weight of both the coupler and the WDH, because that is all weight applied to the hitch.

Anything you add to the tongue increases the tongue weight - propane tanks, batteries, bike rack, etc.

Tongue weight is the weight of the trailer on the tongue, which includes WDH brackets that are mounted on the tongue. It does not include the weight of the hitch (the part that goes into the receiver). That might weigh another 30-45 lbs. it also does not include the weight of the and/or anti-sway bars, which can weigh another 30-40 lbs.

To expand on this then, does the hitch weight plus the tongue weight apply to the max hitch weight of the receiver? Thanks for all the answers.

I've not seen that clearly defined in any specifications, but I believe so.

However, keep in mind that for some of your calculations (ie: TV GAWR), the WDH actually shifts much of the tongue weight back onto the trailer axles.

For example, say your vehicle has a 1200lb payload capacity, and you have a 600lb tongue weight, plus 100 WDH weight. You might think you have consumed 700lbs of your payload capacity, and only have 500lbs left.

But in fact, the WDH might be shifting 300lbs of tongue weight back onto the trailer axles, so in fact, you have only consumed 400lbs of payload capacity.

Hidden benefit of WDH that I think most people overlook.

Here's a link from etrailer that describes what's included in the factory spec tongue weight and what's not included:

Here's a link from etrailer that describes how to actually determine your tongue weight, including the determination of the effect of a weight distributing hitch:

Simplest way is to buy one of these: https://www.weigh-safe.com/product-category/ball-mount/

I always know exactly what my tongue weight is, and since I know the weights of the vehicles I'm hauling, I know that I'm between 10-15%.
