Taos, NM area campgrounds

Last summer we spent 4 nights at Santa Fe Skies RV park in Santa Fe and loved it. So much good food in town I wanted to go back and hit the ones we didn't get to last year, but the wife (artist and big art gallery fan) wants to try Taos instead.

I'm looking at campgrounds on rvlife, but wanted to see if there are any recommendations here.

Looking at Taos Valley RV in town or Angle Fire a little further out. Does anyone have experience with either? Or other recommendations? Cell coverage is important, so the ones in the canyon are kind of ruled out.

We stayed at Santa Fe Skies last month and it was great. Driving to Taos, we scouted for places closer to Taos, and found a couple of places east of Taos on NM64 which looked fine. Contact on Allstays. Along NM68 between Santa Fe and Taos, there is only Taos RV park, which we decided against because it looks like a sardine can. There are also some good Dispersed BLM boondocking off NM64, but the roads into them looked a little dicey. Better to ask someone who has used those roads. So, if you want comfort, advise you stay at Santa Fe Skies and day trip to Taos. JMHO.

BTW: if you’re interested in seeing Georgia O’Keefe’s home in Abiquiu, we discovered you can no longer go there un-escorted. You now have to make reservations at the Georgia O’Keefe reception center in town and pay to go on an escorted tour.

We’ve camped around there and are going there next month. There’s not much around Taos proper. There are a few places in Questa which is North of Taos. I’ve not stayed at them.

We’re going to spend a week at Angel Fire Resort in Mid-May. We’ve not stayed there before, but have seen it and it’s very nice. Expensive, but it certainly looks worth it.

Be aware that it’s a good 30+ min drive on winding roads over to Taos.

There are a couple of places north of Angel Fire in Red River. That part of the road goes over to Questa - it’s a big loop. Again at least 30 min to Taos.

We leave May 1st going to Ruidoso Motorcoach resort for a number of days, then up to American RV Resort in Albuquerque for a week, then Santa Fe Skies for one night before going to Angel Fire. For the return we’re talking a big loop thru the Texas panhandle and home for Memorial Day.

We’ve been to Santa Fe many times and really like Santa Fe Skies but only want to stop for one night this trip… and of course get food from Tomasita's, our favorite.

Our trip would be late June time frame, and I'll be coming from the north so we can take US-64 from south of Raton through Cimarron and Eagle Nest. It will also depend on the fire situation at the time. If you're going mid-May you'll want to keep an eye on the Cooks Peak fire, Angel Fire is currently in "Ready" evacuation status.

We’ve come in that way through Cimarron Canyon. It’s very pretty. The whole canyon is a state park. There are campgrounds along the road through the canyon. If memory serves there were 3 or 4. They were mostly pull offs on the road with not a lot of sites. Most of which were dry camping. We got lucky and got an electric site just before Eagles Nest. However, Eagles Nest was not much of a town back then. But that was probably 15-yrs ago.

We’ve been watching the fires. We’ll be in Ruiodoso next Wednesday and they had a big fire in the last two weeks but got it under control. Hopefully, Angel Fire will be spared.

Agree on Tomasitas. Their bowl of chili is out of this world; it's just a variety of local chilis (no meat) in a soup-like consistency. And the flavors - WOW!

I made a reservation, and I'm looking forward to hearing what you think if it.

Happy travels
