Northern CA highway 101 construction be Klamath and Crescent City

We just went through this area today traveling North. There are a couple sections undergoing major construction, and from Monday to Thursday, the highway is only open from noon till 3pm. It opens again at 7pm, but we don’t like to drive at night.

We timed our arrival to just before 11am and took a place in line. There were probably 50 cars and trucks ahead of us. During the wait, we made lunch, took bathroom breaks, and watched a little TV. Life is great in an RV when there is construction delays!

The construction crews were great, and even came by each car to offer water and granola bars. Shortly after noon, we were on our way through the construction area. Traffic going South may have it a bit rougher, as there were at least three miles of vehicles lined up on the other side waiting for their turn to pass through.

Thanks for this - we're leaving for a trip up the coast from San Diego on Thursday getting to Trinidad on Friday then after the weekend heading to Gold Beach. Doubt they'll be done by then so this is perfect timing (in a good sense that you told us). And timing that will be not a problem since we're not that far south.

I do have another question for you @macnut.

We're coming up the 5 and staying one night in Patterson before heading to the coast and onto Trinidad.

The map is saying to take 299 across to get to the coast turning off the 5 in Redding. I had planned to take more coast route and join the 101 by cutting across the 580 and head north around Oakland or thereabouts.

For some reason, my map made that change about a week or so ago to head more north before getting out of central Ca? I'm using RV Trip Wizard to plan the 2.5 week trip to Southern Or. Edit - OK figured it out - I turned off Tolls - I guess the 580 is toll bridge and for towing a dinghy it's $21 - not a problem but still wondering...

Thoughts? Just wondering as you're in the area and might be familiar or someone might be going across to the 101 in Northern Ca.

FYI, 30-foot class A towing Jeep Wrangler if that makes a difference on the cut across routes (I'm thinking the 299 might be much slower than 580?).

The 580 to the 101 goes through some very populated and congested areas of the SF Bay Area. 101 north of SF is a nice drive, but slower than I-5.

sundog964, maybe work around that congestion by going up the 680 and across the 780? and come out somewhere near Petaluma?

I have no experience up there but yes guessing congestion - I have to go through LA so hoping to leave very early to avoid some of it the day before.

Yes, that would work. We take out RV out by going up the 680. There is only a small stretch of 2 land on the 37 from Vallejo to Novato. Should minimize traffic.

If you take I5 north to Redding , you will need to go over 299 to Eureka. Buckhorn pass is steep and curvey out is Rwdding on 299, but doable.

All in all, i much prefer drying north on 101 out of SF all the way to Eureka. Nice drive, not much traffic, very pretty in many spots, no steep grades. Good luck!

I agree. This is the route I always take…in fact, it’s the route I took this trip! 680 to 780 to 37 to the Lakeville Highway to 101. It’s a nice drive. Note parts of 680 are rough. Better to use second lane. Also, no stopping at the bridge. If you don’t have a FastTrak transponder then they will send you a bill.

Thanks all for the advice and macnut for the road closure update.

I'll be sure to grab my FastTrak and put it in the motorhome.

I make use of Google Maps as it shows current road conditions between point A and point B and I can see the travel time for various alternative routes when they exist. At this point in time according to Google Maps there is a 12 minute delay when traveling on Hwy 101 between Klamath CA and Crescent City. If I know that the delay is only 12 minutes then I can deal with it. If I find traffic at a standstill and have no idea as to the duration of the delay it is another matter entirely.

That’s a great resource. In this case, since the road is open for a narrow window during the daytime, you can get strange results. if you check the map when the road is open….between noon and 3pm (and after 7pm till 8am), it will report the road as open but with a delay. If you check during the hours it is closed, it will try to send you on a huge detour over a mountain pass. That’s how I found out about it at first. After researching more thoroughly I found that the road was not completely closed, but had a 3 hour daytime window for travel. That was a great relief to us!
