Gold Country Trip Report

We took a trip in late May to the Gold Country in the Sierra foothills of CA. Here’s our trip report.

Beautiful and often overlooked country. My mother's family settled in Murphy's during the gold rush, circa 1850. I don't know about this year with the low water but there's usually great fishing at New Melones just above Angels Camp. It also has nice, no-hookup RV camping that, due to the hot summers, is best in the Spring and Fall.

A great day trip in your toad or tow vehicle is to take CA State Route 4 up to the Ebbett's Pass area. The road gets progressively steep, curvy and narrow, down to one lane at spots. It's not accessible for MHs or TTs except for smaller Class Bs. It's a beautiful, heavily forested drive, especially in the higher sections.

Thanks, Bob! It would have been amazing to live there in the gold rush days like your mom’s family. The stories she could tell! I also love the high country and have skied at Bear Valley many many times. Like you said, it’s a beautiful area!

I loved skiing at Bear Valley.

It was a hard life in the 1850s and none of my family struck it rich. Some came via covered wagon and some came by ship. Most of the early ones were, or ended up as storekeepers. My grandfather worked on gold dredges for many years but that was a long time after the gold rush. My mom was born in Jenny Lind in 1923 and her father rode a horse to fetch the doctor who arrived via horse and buggy.

I was an Air Force "brat" so I never lived in California until I came out to go to college. I was was fortunate to spend parts of a couple of summers visiting my grandparents on a ranch where they were caretakers in Calaveras County when I was in Jr. High. That was a good time but all to short.

Very cool, Bob. Thanks for sharing that! Most people think CA is all beaches, but there’s a lot more to it.
