The 2005 Winnebago Journey was fitted with a state of the art entertainment system but in 2022 this technology is well out dated. For me, the behemoth of a TV had to be the first thing to go and I have covered that in an earlier blog. Now I have taken on the sound system which is also very much out of date. Not being that much of a music connoisseur, I would have left well enough alone but the multi-function radio in the dash died leaving me little choice but to replace it.

Remove the old radio by pushing 4 pieces of stripped 12 gauge electrical wire into the 4 holes on the edges releasing the locks that hold the radio in place. The radio will slide right out and all the connected wires can be unplug.

The first obstacle is the size of the hole left in the dash. It is a non-standard opening that is 1 ½ the height of a single DIN radio but of standard width. Many new radios are double DIN but this would require cutting into the dash to make one fit . I opted to go with a single DIN and deal with the gap later. Now days not many folks have use for CDs or tapes so Blue Tooth and USB is all I needed. There are hundreds of options out there at every imaginable price. I went with a familiar brand at a moderate price.

The next obstacle is the confusing wiring. The users manual for the old radio as well as the diagram on the radio chassis may not jive with the actual wire colors. Once you have noted the correct wire colors, disconnect the power and cut the 13 pin connector off leaving some wire as a reference. Not being a fan of solderless connectors, I stripped and soldered each wire and cover the joints with shrink wrap. Plug in the connecter, the antenna and if you have an axillary device, connect the RCA jacks. Turn the power and test the system.

Disconnect all the wires and with the supplied keys remove the mounting frame from the new radio case. Leave the old mounting case in place and slide the new into it. I was able to secure the new one by bending some of the metal tabs and using a couple of dots of two part epoxy.

Now for the open space below the single DIN radio. I found a black flexible plastic tray that was slightly bigger than the opening. I cut this up leaving an L shaped that was wide and deep enough to transform the hole into a compartment for sun glasses or USB flash drives. You can use glue, pop rivets or screws to fasten it but I just made it a tight fit.

Plug in all the wires and cables and insert the radio. The best part is my wife is happy streaming her Pandora play list through the house speakers.
