Winnebago electrolysis/frame rust problem

Posted 09-27-2021 at 10:31 AM by TMAR

When servicing the batteries on my 2020 14 month old Spirit 31K with 3,000 miles I was shocked to see the amount of rust on my frame and even the propane tank.
The grounding bar seems to be ground zero and I am not alone after doing some web searches.
Winnebago states rust is not a covered item, but a defective electrical system would be - I think they have a serious issue that has not been resolved and I'm as mad as a hornet. It will take probably a few grand of sand blasting/priming and painting to repair the damage and I believe it will continue till the cause is resolved. Purchased from LaMesa in Sanford and parked a few miles from the ocean in sunny south Florida so one can't blame salt spray....
Has anyone had a professional check for electrolysis??? That WOULD be covered under the warranty...... and the resultant damages as well.
They just told me to see the dealer and I know the local dealer does not have the expertise to ascertain the cause of the rust.......
This is so widespread I think it's class-actionable if someone has the time and ambition.....

When I saw the year of your coach, I almost spewed my coffee! I recently bought a 2003 Itasca, and it is literally rust free underneath... after 18 years!
Something definitely seems to have changed, and not for the better! I agree with your comments... I would also suggest getting on a creeper and try to determine (take lots of photos, they have a time stamp on them and do wonders for proving a case) whether the rust is "everywhere" or limited to the chassis builder or the coach builder's area of responsibility. What you are showing, would seem to be the coach builder's responsibility.
