I mix 2 tblsp Minwax Red Mahogany to 1 qt of Minwax Golden Pecan and I apply to poplar. If you use pine or some other wood, it may not give you the same results.

I use poplar for all my Journey projects for several reasons. Its grain closely mimics the OEM maple or cherry. It is half the weight of maple or cherry. It is readily available. It is relatively low cost. Easy to work, easy on my cutting tools. It is widely used for upholstered furniture construction, especially couches and chairs.

It does have its drawbacks. Poplar often has a green colored streak. They will turn brown in time but has to be planned for. Also, tends to blotch when stained, So I use a pre-stain conditioner. MinWax makes one if you're staying in the same brand.

I'm not shilling for Minwax. I just like to stay in one brand family to minimize compatibility issues.

Good luck! Share pics of your work.
