Warranty Question

Background: I purchased my 2006 Winnebago Vectra New in 2007. The date of purchase was February 27, 2007. While in Florida in January, I had a small problem with my slides that required the replacement of 2 of the small selanoids. The repair dealer contacted HWH to get authorization for the repair. It was denied. Had to fix it so I out of pocket the $600 plus for the parts and labor figuring I would call HWH myself when I returned home to clear it up. In my "manual bag" I noted on the back of the HWH owners manual for the 625 series leveling system the following:

1st year-defective parts will be replaced with new parts. Labor is included
2nd year-defective parts will be replaced with new or ref-manufactured parts at the discretion of HWH. Labor is included
3rd year-defective parts will be replaced with new or re-manufactured parts at the discretion of HWH. Labor in not included

When I contacted HWH they stated that on 2006 coaches the warranty period is for 12 months only. They went on to say that I must have gotten an "old" manual and even though it is the same system the warranty had changed for 2006 models. At the time of purchase, the dealer said they would send in all the warranty cards and information as a service to the sale....nice touch.

I don't know if they sent it in or not but since they couldn't find my coach in the HWH database I'm assuming they did not. Even though HWH states the work is not "warranty" work they will review my request and may be able to help under the term "good will". They won't cover the entire repair but MAY help with the parts that totaled over $300 of the amount. I'm waiting to hear back as I write this. The folks at HWH by the way are very nice and Joe (tech specialist and person who OK's warranty work) has been extremely polite and helpful on the phone.

Here is my dillema.....Again, on my way back from Florida the Jack's would not come down and the excessive slope light comes on and shuts down the system. After trying everything that Joe suggested for a quick fix nothing worked. Mind you this occurs while I am still in year 2 of my warranty. I have made an appointment at my local Winnebago dealer who inevitably will contact HWH for approval which will be denied. Do I have a 3 year warranty as stated? Should I contact Winnebago? Is it my fault that the manual which came with my coach is wrong?

Anyone have similar situations happen to them? Thanks for your thoughts

Jim

The clock on the warranty starts when you buy it. My journey was almost 2 years old when I bought it, and all repairs were covered no question.

We have 2006 Suncruiser. On January 2nd, when we can back from Florida, our leveling jacks worked great. On an outing in January, we had one jack that would not go down, and one that would not come up. 4 solenoids and a control panel later, the jacks were back working. 2 weeks after the repair, we again had a jack that would not go down.

All this lead to several phone conversations with Frank at HWH. HWH was polite and concerned about our problem. They expressed a new solenoid out and it was repair within 4 days of reporting the problem.

The jacks worked last weekend, and I will test and time them and report the findings to HWH.

I also thought we had a 3 year warrenty, but came to find out it was 1 year.

You bring up a very interesting situation and I hope it works out to your satisfaction. I going to check my HWH book on the same year coach as yours to see if there is any difference in the warranty. I do know as another poster said the warranty begins at date of actual purchase. I wonder what gives? I hope you will keep us up to date on your progress.

There is something called the "Uniform Commercial Code"

This is a federal guideline that most states base their consumer protection act on

Question: does that warranty statement end with "You may have other rights which vary from state to state" If it does, and the state of purchase was NOT Louisiana there is a very good chance that the law says they have to warrant it. IN Louisiana, The laws are different, However that does not necessary mean you are not protected, just that I don't have a clue if you are or not (Per my advisers)

I would suggest you contact someone in the state of purchase familure with warranty law. They will know the UCC as implemented IN THAT STATE, I only know the general guideline (Which you will notice I have carefully refrained from stating, I wish to get you to someone who knows the right answer IN THAT STATE, I don't)

John D,

very interesting comment.....at the bottom of the warranty it does talk about incidental or consequential damages, depending on the state you live in that the above limitations vary from state to state and you "may also have other rights which vary from state to state"

I'm hoping that HWH will come to the plate on this one. Before I go to the next level I'll give it some time. I did draft a letter today, sent it to HWH with a photocopy of the warranty page.

It would seem reasonable to me, and I think in court, the warranty you received with your coach, would be the warranty that you should expect to have coverage under. I would stand on that premise. If HWH refuses, then Winnebago should be on the hook.

jtharley,
Since HWH doesn't seem to want to warrant the problem, I would call the dealer. If the dealer doesn't step up and take care of the problem, call Winnebago Customer Service. They have always been very good at taking care of problems.

Seems to me that Winnebago probably put the manual that came with the jack package installed in to your documentation package, if so the jacks sold to Winnebago had the three year warranty and Winnebago should be able to warranty thru HWH based on their purchase date.

Well, as I said, Thought I have a fair idea of those rights in 49 states, fact is I'm not an expert and you need to know EXACTLY what your rights are.

Thus you need a warranty or UCC lawyer in your state. (or in the state where the transaciton took place) I've only had a cople of issues that might have been resolved by a UCC complaint but..

Cost (At the time) of filing a law suit $25.00 to file plus service cost

Cost of repair $23.95

So as you see, it would have been a loosing deal to complain

Now had it been 249.50.. I might well have learned a whole lot more

I am in a holding pattern right now. I have written a letter, spoke to Joe, Bryan Funke from Winnebago has made a call on my behalf. So it is now up to HWH to make a determination.

BTW- Thank you Bryan. For those that may not know, Bryan has many times in the past helped Winnebago owners address issues just like this. That, in my opinion, is why Winnebago is head and shoulders above the competition when it comes to service after the sale. I did not solicit his help, but after monitoring our forums he simply made his own call to HWH. I'm one of those guys who believes the "right thing will be done" so I don't mind being patient. My april service appointment to fix my Jacks will be the tell tale on how this all works out. I'll keep you all posted.

I have just confirmed my service appointment for April 15th at General RV in Birch Run Michigan. My next post will be to let you all know IF the warranty will be honored by HWH for the repair of the jacks. At this point both HWH and Winnebago have talked, I received correspondence from HWH confirming our phone conversations and the quick fixes that Joe suggested (which I tried) to no avail. I would suggest those who own a 2006 coach equipped with HWH products they check the warranty information on the back of the manuals and call for verification that their warranty is still in effect.

I wanted to take a minute to update everyone on the outcome of my "warranty" question with regard to HWH. First of all I can't thank Winnebago enough (Bryan Funke) for following this issue and helping with phone calls and inquiries.....It appears that HWH is going to honor the 3 year warranty stated on my manual. In addition, between HWH and Winnebago, I will be getting reimbursed for my out of pocket expenses for the repairs in Florida. In addition, they will be authorizing the repair work for the Jack's on the 15th of this month when I take the coach to General RV here in Michigan.

As some of you know, this is my third Winnebago coach and the reason I continue to buy Winnie products is because of the treatment I have received "after the sale". Unlike some of the horror stories we have all read on this and other sites as it relates to other coach manufacturers, Winnie is by far head and shoulders over the competition when it comes to the quality of their products and the support they give to their owners. THEY GET IT! I can't imagine that my experience is unique, it most likely is simply the culture Winnie has built around it's products. An RV is a huge commitment to make for a "hobby" and I am so glad that as a novice many years ago I went with a nameplate that has given me such wonderful memories and experiences. Again, thank you all for your input and thanks Bryan and Joe (from HWH) for another happy ending to a wonderful 2 month trip in our home away from home.

Winnebago and HWH rock! We've been treated with outstanding service, both in and out of warranty by both companies. This is our 3rd consecutive Winnebago motorhome, because we appreciate the way they treat us, their customers.

Here is the final update on my warranty. Both HWH and Winnie have come to the plate.....The jack problem is a "board" and HWH is sending a new one to the dealer and paying for one hour of Labor.

I couldn't be more pleased with how this all worked out. Yes, I out of pocketed about $700+ in total and should get most of that back. These are two VERY GOOD companies who are customer focused and obviously have business models that understand the needs of the customer. Joe at HWH and Bryan at Winnebago worked hand in hand to make sure that the end result is one happy coach owner.

Thanks to both.
