My wife and I have been considering moving up to a larger MH and doing some long trips. We came across an 05 Vectra 40AD owned outright by a private party. They claim to have all maintenance record. The NADA value range is $128850 to 151620. Taking in to consideration the economy what would be an good opening offer, if the rig meets our requirements and is in satisfactory condition.

RV sales are slow, so I'd offer 15% under low retail per NADA Guides (no adds for options). Tell the dealer that you are making a fair offer based on the current economy and not prepared to offer any more.

Can't help you out on price, but we have the 40AD and like it very much. You really want the power reel for the shore power cord, hopefully the one you are looking at has that option.

Can't really think of anything in particular you need to be aware of for that particular model year of Vectra/Horizon. Winnie had a few new model problems/issues with the '04 Vectra/Horizon, but the '05 has the benefit of some refinements.

Are you going to trade your current coach? If so I am sure that is going to enter into the equation. What price are they asking? (I assume you're buying from a dealer).

You might see what other coaches like the one you're looking for are going for and base your price on that.

A dealer offered me $85000 as a trade-in value on my 2005 Horizon 40AD. Needless to say I didn't do the trade. Price is relative now.. How bad do they need to sell?
My bedroom slide leaked and I think that was a common problem.

I have talked to other '05 owners that never had a leak issue - go figure I would hope on an '05 for sale today, those kinds of problems would be long gone but who knows?

I don't know if the bedroom slide on the 40AD is the same as the one on the left side of the 36RD - but ours has leaked from day one. It has been "fixed" several times, and is better, but it still leaks with the slide out in a driving rain.

With today's economy, I figure we'd be lucky to get $100K for our 36RD, retail. Not that it's for sale.

Go to eBaY and research listings that actually sold. I suspect that the great majority didn't meet reserve, or got no bids.

my suggestion is to call the GOOD SAM CLUB at 800-234-3450. ask them for the wholesale, trade in value, and base your bid on that.

Thanks for the heads up on the slide leak. I have a buyer for my current rig so no trade is involved. The asking price was $179000 but that was reduced to $159000. It's owned by a private party, it is paid off and he said he will negotiate. I don't mind playing hard ball with a dealer, but i am uncomfortable dealing with a private party.

Stand firm even with a private party. Don't end up paying more than you should just because it's a private seller. Remember there are alot of coaches to be had these days at a very good price. Take every detail into consideration and go slow. Good luck and keep us posted.

One thing I like about Winnebago is how responsive they are to information requests. I emailed a request to see if i could get a build sheet and a warranty history on two coaches that I am interested in. They responded in 4 hours with the build sheets. The only down side is they said the warranty history is confidential.

Lowball at $128?

NADA low retail is $122,080 for the 350HP engine, $125,850 with the 400 HP.

Trade in would be around 10% less than that, about $110,000. And that's if you could find a dealer that wanted it.

"Lowball" would be more like $100,000, and that wouldn't even be an insult.

Of course if you like it, and it's in a condition you like, pay what you want and enjoy it!

Along those lines ..why is there so much attention paid to NADA.. low retail..wholesale ...these used coaches are worth what you are willing to pay..EBAY..rvtrader..RVUSA all should be everyones first stop when they are buying a used coach

Thanks for the input. I went and checked out the coach, it was in good shape and all systems worked and it drove fine. Unfortunately the maintenance records are spotty or missing. The owner is ill and the son in law in handling the transaction and we were unable to come to an agreement on price the difference was about $10,000.. Unfortunately he decided to place it on consignment and after 3 days the rear cap was badly damaged in an accident on the lot.

...with a Buy It Now of $149,995 and Make Offer; has only one pending offer.

It's a buyer's market right now; if I was trading up, my offer would be based on no more than wholesale value, and probably less, based on fuel prices and current resale values. If the MH is in perfect condition, then I'd adjust my offer slightly based on that. RV dealers are disappearing here in California, so that tells me that market demand isn't very strong. I've been told that dealers are taking trade-ins at $15k - $20k BELOW wholesale...
