Which oil do you use? Iam looking to help my milage. Some people use 5W40 and some use 15W40 has anyone tried both and checked milage? They tell me you must use CJ4 for the ISL engine. Any coments will help. Thanks

You must use CJ4 in a 2007 and later emissions engine.

In addition, I would stick with Cummins recommendations while under warranty and I don't think you'll notice much difference with a different oil.

Stay with the Cmmns recommendations.

Doubt that you coudl run eneough miles over the life of the engine to make a measurable difference with an RV.

Hi Techie: Literature has me confused..(as usual). What IS the recommendation for a Cummins ISM 500. I currently would use Rotella 15W-40 but can't find the reference on jug to "CJ4" only a ref. to "CG4" Is CG4 wrong to use, or is CJ4 a misprint in above posts??

G'morning rotts4u!! Thanks for info. Looks like it'll have to be CJ4, and, I'll have to give away my 3/4 full gallon of Rotella CG4 that I kept when we changed rigs. Thanks again. Steve

Can you use it in the Genny? Or your car/ truck, lawn mower etc?

Frankly I would not worry about having 3 quarts of non CJ-4 in a crankcase of 24 quarts total but that is just me.

CG4 is old stuff - your store has had it in the shelf awhile. There was CH4 and now (since 1/1/2007) there has been CJ4. Nothing wrong with it as far as age is concerned, but the specs have been advancing steadily and your new engine absolutely requires CJ4 spec oil.

I stick with 15W40. There is no need for 5W unless your run in very cold weather (below zero)
