Gas Springs for basement door

Wimpy Gas Springs no longer hold the door open..1998 Chieftain
I have a Winnebago part number 107796-08-000, price is 37.15ea from Winnebago.. I need to cross reference this part number in order to obtain the correct part for less than an "Arm & Leg".. Anybody replace these with off the shelf Gas Springs?

I just started doing the same thing on mine. All struts are weak. Mine were 60#, I replaced with 80#. Will see if they last longer. I have scoured the internet for the best price and for the length and strength. All seem to have the same price when they add shipping. So I went with this eBay shop. Hope this helps.

I replaced them on previous Win. motorhome. Make sure you use about the same rating struts, otherwise your doors won't work as well.

Look for gas struts here; mcmaster.com They have all sizes and weight capacities. They are reasonably priced. I found the stronger ones that I needed and the RV dealer did not have.

McMaster is an industrial parts supplier and they have a lot of parts, I'm like a kid in the BIG toy store!

When I looked at Autozone and O'Reilly's they couldn't cross reference my length and pound ratings to what they had on the rack. Most of what they have is for a hood or trunk. Much stronger that what I needed.

I bought mine from Sun City RV for ~$22.95.

Just checked McMaster-Carr and the prices look good. Depending on shipping costs, I might order some when I get the MH back. I'm betting they are better quality that the store bought ones.

Just for curiosity sake, what would be a problem with installing a higher pressure spring as long as the length is compatible?

The answer in nothing unless they are so strong that the force to close the door causes a mechanical failure or wears out your arm.

By the way, camping world has them also. I have bought them from Autozone and Camping World and they work about the same. Ours are 10" and 60 lbs. for what that's worth.

On some doors such as the fiberglass ones I had on a previous Cardinal 5er, the higher pressure can break to edge of the door, Been there, done that

SPD also has the ones that won't rust as easily as the steel ones, I think iits called nitride

If you go down to your local RV dealer, there is a very good chance they sell items from Coast Distribution, Their catalogue has a a list of after market struts listed by length and capacity - the 17" struts all retail for under $30.00. So if you can take your existing strut off and lift the door and figure approximately how much weight your lifting, taking into account the amount of leverage required - this should be a fairly cheap fix

When I bought my 98 adventurer none of my doors would stay up.I replaced 1 strut on each door with struts from oreilys auto parts.When I told them I needed 11 of them, they had them next day & charged me about $15 each.That was 2 yrs ago,& when they stop supporting themselves I will replace the other struts.
