DEF requirement in newer diesel engines

We are looking at a 2010 Itaska Meridian V 34y.

Does this engine require DEF? Can't find anything in the brochure or owners manual that mentions it.

Maybe, maybe not. 2010 models was cut in for DEF needed methinks. DEF is not a blocker to purchase me me, it's not a bad thing. IMHO.

2010 WAS the year of change.........

Cummins did add DEF but thought it was Fall Production on Meridian Maxum Chassis (Freightliner XCL)
Early Cummins ISC 8.3L----360 HP
Later Cummins ISC 8.3L----380 HP (SCR & DEF added)

But I thought the Meridian V Class (Frieghtliner XCS) came with
Cummins ISB 6.7L 340 HP which didn't get SCR/DEF until 2011

Dealer says no. Owners manual online doesn't mention.

Wouldn't mind if I didn't have to manually add it. It's a 6.7.

First of all, don't trust what the dealer says. They will virtually never tell a prospective sale the truth if they think it might keep them from coming in. Ask for the VIN and call the manufacturer and check. I know Fleetwood and most other mfgs can easily tell you these type of details.

As far as DEF/no DEF goes, from an openers perspective I'd prefer not having the complex anti pollution systems on modern Diesels, but I'm into my 2nd year of DPs and it's no big deal. I have a 10 gallon tank and just fill it up as required.

I own a 2011 Itasca Meridian 34Y - no DEF for me. Coach was manufactured in fall of 2010 and engine in late 2009.

I have a 2011 Meridian 34Y and I do have DEF. My coach was manufactured in January of 2011. Apparently, earlier production of 2011 models do not have DEF. Since you are inquiring about a 2010 model, I'm sure you don't have DEF.

I think it will depend on the year of the chassis

The requirements depend on the date of manufacture of the engine & chassis. There are a lot of 2010 and 2011 model year coaches built on 2009 model year chassis. They would not require DEF.

Except........engine mfg. determines what emissions go with their engines to be EPA Compliant

Cummins.....
2010 ISB 6.7L-----no DEF
2011 ISB 6.7L......DEF

I have 2010 Journey Express (same as Itasca Meridian V Class). It was manufactured in November of 2009. It has a DPF but does not use DEF. It is my understanding that the determining factor is the year the engine was manufactured. After January 1, 2010 has DEF.
My coach also has basement air conditioning (which I'm very happy with) and later units have 2 rooftop air conditioners.

PS: I'd not worry a bit about having DEF. A lot of old diesel guys denigrate it. But I've yet to hear of a problem due to DEF. After all it just goes into the DPF which is in the exhaust.

From the 2011 brochure: "(380-hp Cummins ISL Diesel Engine Equipped With 2010 EPA Emissions - Fall 2010 Production)"

With that said, I see nothing in the 2010 0r '11 brochure about an upgraded power plant available as an option for the 34Y.

The DEF is not a big issue. You just need to be certain that you don't run out EVER. The Flying J/Pilot type truck stops offer it at the pump but it is located on the wrong side for us. If business is light I come into the pump against traffic to get to the DEF pump.

Hope this helps.

Happy trails,
Rick Y

The only down side I can see with DEF, other than the complexity it adds to the coach, is it increases the cost per mile. Whatever your MPG for diesel fuel you add the DEF for a total cost per mile. And of course as mentioned above, don't want to ever run out. We were in Alaska in 2014, one of the coaches with us ran low on DEF and had to take their toad 40 miles to purchase more. Ok, that was their mistake, not having enough on hand, but not all fuel stops have DEF available, you need to PLAN ahead.....

You can get DEF almost anywhere nowadays. Even most Walmart stores have it....

As to additional cost per mile - we used about 4g per 10k miles - insignificant cost increase. Granted a larger slengine will use more as ours was the 3L MB in a Sprinter.

Our 2011 Revolution (450hp ISL) used roughly 2 gallons per 100 gallons of fuel, or 700 miles. At the cost of a 2.5 gallon jug at Walmart that's a hair over 1 cent per mile. Can't tell you yet what the new rig will use (600hp ISX). Looks like it could be as much as twice the ISL or 2 cents per mile. In a 6,000 mile season that would be 60 to $120 for the year. Insignificant to the overall cost of travel.
