California Owners, Smog issue
To all the California owners, your smog will not pass if you have had your chassis battery disconnected before the test. You will get a computer error. Bottom line, your computer collects data while you drive and during the smog test, this data is checked/collected. If you have disconnected your chassis battery, no data available. You will have to drive it around for the next 3 to 4 days to develop a database.
In the past, not really an issue, but with the newer RV's having a chassis switch, may become more of an issue.

The battery thing is true of all vehicles, not just motor homes. The reset can be done with about a thirty mile drive, I have had to do this and it worked.
The exemption for bi-annual inspection is by county, not altitude.
I am not aware of a chassis battery switch, new one on me.

Not sure what might be different on my 2005, but I live in California and have a battery disconnect installed on the chassis battery. Every other year, I take it out of storage (having used the disconnect switch) and drive no more than 5 miles to my smog shop. It's passed every time with no errors or issues. Guess I've been really lucky, which would be something new for me based on my ownership experience! -RT

On my 01 35U, my bi-annual smog test was in Feb. I drove it the 5 mi to the test station for an am appt and it failed. Had to go to another place. He told me, since it was winter, before I come in for my appt, drive it down the freeway and back several miles and get that tailpipe warmed up good, come in, leave it idling and he would test it which the engine and the 30' tailpipe was warmed up. It passed, no problem, but since I was labled a "gross polluter" I had to smog test it annually since then. I don't know if thet still do the tailpipe wand anymore, but FYI for those with gas units in CA

Not too sure about that; I grew up in Cherry Valley, CA at an altitude of 3500 ft. I've had to smog my vehicles since I started driving. My dad still lives there, still has to smog his vehicles every two years.

I do know that outside of the South Coast Air Quality Management District, smog checks are only required when ownership changes. Not sure what the exact boundaries of that are.

Why not do what I do. For some fortunate reason I am out of state at renewal time. Fill out the form and you get your tabs. At least in Washington it works. Then if you ever get back home you promise to get that smog inspection done. Right?
