Blowout!

Driving eastbound on I-10 in Palm Springs CA, I started getting a once-per-revolution slap from a rear tire. I started slowing from 60 mph to pull over and inspect when 'BANG', it blew. It being the right rear inside tire. I was able to pull over to a safe spot just past the Gene Autry bridge. Casual inspection showed noting abnormal so I got out the tire pressure gauge and sure enough, the inside tire had zero pressure. So I called Progressive Insurance for their roadside assistance.

They answered promptly, were very nice and after verifying my VIN and policy, said they would send me a text about when help would arrive. About five minutes later I received the text stating that Hill Towing would arrive to change my tire (I had a spare) in 25 minutes. And they did. They brought a jack but I was able to lift the rear tires with the HWH jack and they removed the blown tire and swapped it with the under chassis mounted spare. They also added air to the spare to get it up to 80 psi. Total time to change-about 20 minutes and I was on my way.

My tire is a Michelin LTX M/S LT225/75R16. I think the date code was 12/10. The tire had a sidewall blowout. It doesn't look like a true zipper blowout but rather a large chunk both in circumference and radial. I am sure I did not hit anything on the road. This tire had just over 18,000 miles. I don't think the spare had ever been on the ground. The inside tires are steel-rimmed and the outside tires are aluminum. The spare is steel. I need to replace the tire and will seek redress from Michelin on their warranty program but fully expect them to deny the claim as that seems to be their modus on blowouts blaming it on the operator. When I get the tire replaced, I will take some pics and post them here. I will also ask the installing dealer to closely inspect the remaining tires. I will leave the spare on the ground.

Any idea if I had a tire pressure and temperature monitor if I would have been able to detect a problem before the blowout?

You may have had a rock or something stuck between the duals. Its happened to me on a semi truck.

Except it was the inside of the inside dually, so I don't see how a rock could have caused that.

If the blowout was caused by the tire being under inflated then, yes, a TPMS could have helped avoid it. However, they won't do much for you if it was just a straight, sudden failure.

The tire pressures were verified 4 days prior before we left Phoenix going to Yorba Linda CA.

A TPS will also tell you if the tire temp is rising, another indication of pending tire failure.

Had the new tire installed by Discount Tire today. Cost was $230 but Discount gave me credit for $123 so net cost was $107. They also inspected all tires and pronounced them OK. Photo follows:

X2 IMHO I'm glad we invested in a TPMS. I like having the peace of mind knowing the tires are being monitored. Glad it worked out so well for you. We've got to get a spare.

I guess I'm the only person that reads. REPLACE them all. RV tires. Maximun 7 years. reccomended 3 year.. One can only wonder,, WHY the old garbege on a $25000.00/1500000.00 coach Please explain it to me..

The OP stated that the date was December of 2010, that's less than 3 years old. I think every 3 years replacement is getting a little crazy. I think 7 years with frequent inspection is more than enough.

Well actually its the 12 week of 2010...so March time frame, but I still agree with you on 3 years being a tad on the soon side of replacement.
