How often should the air dryer be serviced on a Diesel pusher? My 05 Horizon has 16,000 miles and we have owned it for two years. I am preparing to take it in for an engine oil change and the tech said I might consider servicing the air dryer. Cost: $300

There are 2 filters in my air brake system; one is a dessicant filter and the other is a canister filter. Check your owner's manual, as there are 2 types being used on Freightliners, but I believe the most frequent interval is 18 months for filter changes.

You should also pull your lanyiards about once a month to drain your ping tanks.

I hate to admit it but I have never drained the ping tanks and don't know where the lanyards are located. I don't recall anything in the Winnebago manual.

Look just above and inside of the right front tire. You should see three wire lanyard loops protruding out of a hole in the frame. Each one is connected to one of the three air tank drain valves. You should hear some air escape when you pull each lanyard.

Just changed mine in our 2003 Journey. It looks like a really big oil filter. Inside is the dessicant and the coelesent (sp?). It was about $129 and I changed it myself. Screws in just like a oil filter. I believe the manual says change every 18 months.

Bought ours at a local truck parts place. They sell Cat, Cummins parts etc. Went in the MH and got the receipt. The following are the part numbers. Remember these are the numbers for our chasis and yours may be different.

Haldex filter kit DQ6050 (COALESLING filter and DESICCANT in the same cartridge)

The part number listed on the receipt is:
DA33120M1D List $136.98 Paid $109.58

Hope this helps

Check your Freightliner info, your air dryer may only need to be serviced every 36 months.

Below is from the Freightliner maintenance manual. Click on the attached link to view pictures of the dryer (page 9).
Note Chassis built on or after 11/28/03 require 36 month change, prior to that the interval is 18 months.

Freightliner chassis air brake systems are equipped with an air dryer to remove the condensed moisture from compressed air. The air
dryer is equipped with a spin-on desiccant cartridge that is scheduled to be changed every 18 months. Inside this is a coalescing filter that should be changed every 18 months. The dryer is located either on the right hand frame rail (behind the rear axle) or between the frame
rails (behind the rear axle) on later models. Chassis built on or after11/28/03 have a PURest Dryer with a scheduled change interval of 36 months.
(WARNING: Air Tanks should be bled of all pressure any time you work on the air system)

Florida Guy - how much trouble is it to do the job yourself. Had mine done at Ft. Myers FL dealer earlier this year. They charged within a few cents of what you paid for the filter kit, but charged 1.5 hours of labor!!! For a spin-on filter?? I didn't know anything about dryer filters at the time except that they needed to be changed at 18 months (my build date 10/03).

Think I'll do it myself next time, if it's just a matter of dumping the air with the lanyards and then R&R the filters.

This isn't a hard job depending on where it's located on your coach. I was a bit of a pain on my Monaco because the access door doesn't have shocks on it, so I have to use a 1X2 to hold it open and the cab air radiator is in there too and it has to be held out of the way. You need to bleed all of the air out of the system first. It takes a large filter wrench to remove the canister filer. The coelescing filter is under the canister. This sits in a cylinder inside the dryer housing. You need to clean it very thoroughly after removing the filter. The kit also comes with a new pressure relief valve and a new purge guard.

On our chassis total time was about ten minutes (after the air was bled down). No harder than changing the oil filter, but you do need a large strap wrench, the canister is somewhat large and the normal filter wrench is way to small to grip. Ours didn't come with a new pressure relief valve or purge guard. Those must be for the Roadmaster chassis.

I had mine done right after I got the rig since it was 3 yrs. old. I got the kit from NAPA...was about $110. I wanted to do it myself but on my rig, it looked like I would have to remove the entire assembly from the frame to R & R the filters. I let my RV mechanic do it...he did have to remove the entire dryer from the frame to do the job.

On my 2004 Meridian the dryer looks like a large canister that must be removed from the coach (2 air lines must be removed too), then seperated in half to get to the filter. Wish it was as simple as unscrewing the filter and replacing it. Doesn"t look like a very easy job even considering I change all other filters including the Allison two filters. Has anyone ever changed this type themselves or is it worth paying a shop to do it? Thanks.

I am like smlranger, as I had to remove my housing to perform the service. I have an 02 Journey DL 36LD. It took about 2 hours to do this one, but I'm sure I can knock 45 minutes off the next change. To tell you the truth, I do not believe mine can be serviced on the chassis, as it is in a very tight area.

I too paid right aroung $105.00 for my kit at the freightliner dealer.

The 2003 Journey 39W must have a different chassis (more room?). All I had to do is move a couple air lines (not disconnect, just move a couple inches). There is plenty of room to unscrew and remove the dryer. 15 minutes after I got my tools ready and bled the receiver tanks.
