Water Pump Strainer

Honestly, this seems like it would be the simplest of task but I can't get the cover to the water pump strainer off. I know , I know, push in and turn counter clockwise Has anyone ever had one of these things to freeze up or is there a trick that I'm missing.
Thanks.

Not sure about your pump , but the strainer on my coach water pump doesn't come apart, it's throw away if you can't back flush it with a garden hose.

If it looks like it should come apart, could you post a picture.

I will try to take a shot and post it here. ( I assume you use the attachment button. ) In owners manual for our 36 DL , it gives instructions on removing cover to clean strainer. We've only had her for 2 weeks and are still trying to learn the ropes. The pump looks like the photo in the manual so I guess it is original equipment ?
Thanks.

Don't Touch It!

Most are throwaway. They will leak if you mess with it. Unless it is clogged and you have reduced flow, I would not touch it.

Skip, I'll attempt to attach a photo of the water pump and strainer here following the instructions you gave. Thanks.
For the time being, I may follow the advise of "JohnnyB" and take a "if it ain't broke, don't break it" course. But , at some time , I'll probably have to
clean the thing out ??
Thanks all.

Looks just like mine and I'm 99.9% sure they don't come apart.
Froze one up once and I think it was $11 Canadian to replace.

Took a look around online and couldn't find that exact strainer , looks like it's been replaced by , a unit that does come apart.

Sale price about the same .

Interesting post.

I've had seven RV's and didn't know there was a strainer on the water pump.

Have to check mine out tomorrow and see if it has a strainer.

Skip,
I really appreciate you taking the time to help. If the picture I posted looks as though you might have the same unit , you might want to look at the operators manual for the 2001 Journey.
winnebagoind.com>resources>year = 2001>model = journey>operators manuals>2001-2010 operators manuals>2001 operators manual>Winnebago Journey>page 7-2 ( I believe it is page #78 of the PDF ).
I'm going to leave well enough alone for now but , if the units are the same in both your coach and mine , it seems odd that Winnebago would suggest the strainer be cleaned ?? I'm brand new to this and have so much to learn

How do you know that the pump is original maybe the original screen did come apart but the new pump and screen does not. I consider the pump screen the last line of defense. I use a whole house water filter on my inlet water hose so pump screen should not get stopped up.

Don't know if it is original or not. Will contact previous owner for this info. Up close, it just looks identical to the picture in the original operators manual ?? There is a whole house filter at inlet but it has obviously set up for a long while and is full of algae and slime. Must clean this out and shock tank then drain what I can so the dead beasties don't clog anything up

Not all coaches have those strainers. Although not a bad idea, they're mostly effective for use right after the coach is built as they'll catch plastic drillings/chips left over after manufacture. The kind the pump can pull in and allow the check valves to become contaminated. After that/in use, hopefully there shouldn't be that much crud introduced to the tank for a filter like this to be necessary?

Bottom line, if it's not plugged now, it's generally just something to keep an eye on. If you can blow through it freely, it's fine.

We have a 2002 Adventurer 33v and it has that pump and strainer. Our manual also tells us to clean the strainer, haven't done it yet.

Again, thanks to all for the support. Marguerite, how long have you had your Adventurer and do you have a whole house filter ? From the responses here, it seems
I must be "picking nits" Just drained the tank and lines and 'Shocked" the tank with
chlorine. When I started the water pump to circulate the chlorine through the lines , it worked fine. Guess I'll cross the strainer bridge when I come to it but it bothers me to not be able to perform a task suggested in the manual.

Yes, my previous motorhome had a strainer that was filled with plastic chips. I was the second owner of the 3 year old m/h and the problem had never been caught.

Water Pump Strainer

To the original poster: I have the same strainer and yes it can be opened and the screen removed for cleaning. I still have the original on my 2000 Horizon. It can be a struggle to remove and in the past I have removed the hose feeding the filter (the black fitting in your picture) and then simply unscrewed the filter from the plumb. Once you have it off, you should be able to get a better grip on it to open it up. It will take 10-15 minutes top. You will be surprised what comes out.

Hi Ron and Lin, We have owned it since Feb. 2014. We do not have a whole house filter.
I have tried to respond to your post twice and lost them both before I could post them.
Hope this one makes it.

DawgFan , It makes sense to take it apart to be able to better handle it. Only concern would be leaks when I put it back together
Marguerite , I did not mean to pry. Just was curious to know if you'd had her long enough to know if there was a problem related to pump/strainer. I've only had the Journey for 2 weeks now. Thanks.
