Water heater problem won't stay lit

I have an 06 Winnebago Voyage 31W that has a problem with the gas water heater in that it attempts to light several times and sometimes it will light. If I open the access door it will light the first time and continue to burn after I close door. I think I read that sometimes you need to drill some more holes to allow more combustion air but I cannot find it using the search function. It might have been on another forum.

If anyone has any insight into this problem or can find the thread about it I would appreciate all replies.

Thanks,

Bob

Well Sir,
I was under the impression that Winne and Itasca overcame this issue a while ago. Maybe not. But, many of us have had issues with our water heaters trying to stay lit after the fired off. What I did on ours was, popped a 3" diameter hole, in the lower right corner of the water heater door and, installed a louvered vent in that hole. Now, it seems to work better for about 98% of the time. The other two percent, it does what it used to, light, cough, spit, sputter, "FLAME OUT"!!! Then, it will light again and burn for a minute or four, then start the process over again. But, like stated, sometimes it lights and burns 'till the cycle is over. So, that's about all I can offer on this subject pal.

I had the same problem. The ultimate solution was replacing the controller board. Before you replace the board, make sure all the connections are clean and tight. That helped on mine for awhile.

I'll ditto the additional 3" louvered vent that FireUp described. I've done this as well and it has made the operation of my H2O heater much more predictable. Though, I will admit it still has a case of the hicups now and again.

Thanks for replies. Is the hole in the interior door or in the exterior compartment door?

Here is where I installed my air vent on the water heater door. I bought the little vent at Home Depot and drilled 4 one inch holes behind the vent then pop riveted tye vent over the holes. My water heater works great now.

Thanks for the picture. I thought that was where it should be drilled but a little clarification never hurts. I've assumed to many things in my life that came back to bite me.

Just spent two days dealing with water heater issues -- it ran great until one of the gas valve solenoids failed as well as the gas valve control line on the control board. Since I had a 20-year old setup, especially in the case of the board, it meant retrofitting the newer equivalents, which included a new igniter. The igniter proved to be the biggest headache -- getting it grounded well enough and setting the electrode gap just so and positioned in the ideal spot in the flame path was trickier than it ought to be.

So... it might be worth checking the combination igniter/flame sense probe assembly. Weak spark won't ignite the gas reliably, and poor heating of the electrodes will make the controller think the flame is out, and it will shut off the valve and re-cycle. Everything has to be spot-on or the darn thing will drive you nuts.

Water Heater

A friend and I pulled our hair out trying to troubleshoot the same problem in his Itasca. The water heater would work fine with the outer door propped open, but not closed. Drilling holes in the inner door did not fix the problem. At altitudes above 5,000 ft it would not light unless the outer door was propped open. The reefer and furnace operated fine.

As a last resort, we checked the gas pressure at the water heater, and found it to be low. The system working pressure is between 10.5 and 11.5 inches water column. Replaced the pressure regulator, and now the water heater operates normally.

i drilled a bunch of 1/4'' holes in the bottom edge of my door. i also removed the plastic cover on the flame view port. this fixed my flame out problem with the door closed.

  • 'V' Bent the bottom cover
  • Removed the lower weather stripping
  • Punched 4 holes in the front cover. But this was because Itasca already had louvered the outside door. They just never finished the thought. Unfortunately this has nothing to do with the control board. It's a simple matter of oxygen starvation.

As I read this thread I find this issue has been ongoing since 1992. The responses are from owners of the following year coaches, 92, 97, 99, 01, 03, 04, 06 twice and my 2009 Adventurer. Mine has been to the dealer with the flameout issue with no luck. It works fine with the outer door open. You would think Winnebagos engineers? could solve this problem.
