But they also come in a 7/8" size as well, which is what I have.

I can't seem to get a socket in there on mine .............. plumbing interference. So I reverted back to being a dreaded "pliers mechanic" using a pr of slip-joint pliers AKA channel locks. After years of abuse it is getting a bit rounded off so I have a couple of spares on board. I read on one of the forums that the plug MUST be the nylon type ......... a PVC plug from a big box store won't take the heat. I heeded that advice and bought the correct plugs from CW ......... pretty cheap.

Good times and safe travels.............

27mm works on mine. Just a bit loose but it works. My drain plug has an integral anode rod as part of the plug.

The OP stated that he had an Atwood Water heater which is an aluminum water heater and does not need an anode rod -- as a matter of fact it should not have one. Only use the nylon plug like the original one as it is also a safety feature (in addition to the pressure releaf valve). The other type of water heater, I can not recall the name right now, does require an anode rod in the water heater. Not yelling at anyone, just stating facts as I know them.

My Atwood came with the 7/8" plug, and I learned to replace it at least every 2 years or it would crack/leak on it's own. Somewhere I ended up the larger head 15/16" and they seem to last longer. But I do always have a spare because over time they get hard and while eventually leak or crack.

Think you may need one of these angled wrenches made for the job

Here is an angled wrench with a different size at each end. I think it is made for the job.

water heater plug, why NOT brass?

can someone explain why the plug should be nylon and not brass. I made (what i thought) was a nifty modification using a brass fitting (with teflon tape) and a short braided hot water hose w/1/4 turn valve, making it a snap to drain the hot water heater tank!

That sounds like a great idea. Do you have a pic?

regarding Why Nylon.. I have no facts to support this but the same question on other sites point out various reasons, main one may be to protect the threads of the tank from ever being cross threaded, others say Brass is a dissimilar metal and may weld itself to the aluminum tank. The nylon plug is also suppose to act as a freeze plug and blow out if tank has water and freezes or even blow if the pressure valve fails. Wonder if Atwood customer support could give a fact based answer ?

Smitty56 - here is a pic of the mod I did on my water heater. Components are 1/2 SharkBite L (thread to slip), PEX, then a 1/2 SharkBite valve (usually used for a washing machine HW inlet). Click image for larger version
