Unhappy my water pump doesn't shut off

I have a 2004 Minnie. I am new to RVing and not mechanically inclined. Usually when I run water, the water pump turns on briefly then shuts off. Now all of a sudden when I run water, the water pump keeps running. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Three things come to mind:

1. Bad pressure switch - It's function is to shut the pump off when the pressure builds to a pre-set level.

2. Leak or open valve- Even a small leak could cause the pressure to fall short of that required to trip the pressure switch. Make sure all your faucets and valves are closed, including your outdoor shower. Your toilet could also be leaking.

3. Empty tank - Hopefully you've checked your tank but if it's almost empty, the pump will run and run. Your water flow will be low as well.

Here's a link to a more exhaustive list:

Also check the water heater pressure relief valve. They can stick open or fail and leak.

I'm not clear on something.
Does the water pump keep running as long as you are running water, then it shuts off when you turn off the faucet?
Or does it keep running after you turn off the faucet?

Actually I tried it again while the faucet is running the pump runs for three or four seconds then stops for three or four seconds and then repeats

That sounds normal to me. The pressure switch is doing its job by cycling on as the pressure fades and off as it builds. I'm not sure why you didn't encounter this from the beginning.

I misread your initial post and thought you were saying that it would continue to run after you shut the faucet off. As I would hear countless times through school, "read the question carefully before you answer".

This is normal depending upon the flow rate of the faucet. It also tells me that the pressure switch is working.

Don't feel bad you weren't the only one. Maybe we could start a club.

Thank you . This is my first RV and I’ve only used it a couple of times . I didn’t remember hearing the pump turning on and off like that so I thought there was something wrong . Relieved to learn that is normal . Have a good day

Make sure your fresh water fill valve is in normal. Not fill. If the valve is in fill, you will not get a seal for the water pressure and the pump will run continuously, regardless of if there is a faucet on or not.

You might clean the screens on the faucets. May not be getting full flow. That would allow the pump to reach its pressure limit with faucet on

The "problem" has been resolved, everything was working normally so no need for further responses.
