Adding light to water heater electric switch

On my new motor home the water heater electric switch is not lit when it is on. What would I have to do in order to add a panel light that would come on when I turned on the switch. I can see me leaving it on if it is not lit, for on the old motor home it was lit switch when on.

darbyjudy, year and model of your coach would help. On older models the switch controlled the 110VAC to the water heater, on newer models it switches 12VDC control signal to the water heater.

I am doing the same thing to mine tomorrow. On Monday i was cleaning and i did just what you said and left it on overnight. So i will be adding an idiot light.
On my 2004 Suncruiser the switch is a standard household light switch but it is only feeding 12v to the EMS/relay. I have some 5mm 12v LEDs from another project and will just drill a hole in the switch plate off to the side. and wire the LED to the switch. i will drill the hole on the small side and just press the LED in for a snug fit then a dab of hot glue to be safe.

50 LEDs for only $7
Amazon LEDs

darbyjudy-

Can you post pictures of the front and back of the existing switch? It may be that there's a drop-in replacement available.

This is on a 2017 Holiday Rambler Vacationer. Maybe some one has a wiring diagram and can see if it is possible just to place a small diode light in the circuit.

Not sure what the design of your switch is, but we replaced our rocker switch when the light went out. The part number is 135740-06-01A and is still a valid number if you google it.

This is what i was thinking. Ours has a switch that lights up internally when closed. It's right next to two other switches that are basically the same but not lighted.

Ours illuminates green but is similar to this.

here are some pics of how mine turned out. I decided on a yellow LED since it seemed a little dimmer than the Red one i had. Took about 15 minutes and a $0.50 led i had laying around.

If it is a standard 110 volt switch, go to Home Depot and get a standard 110 V switch with a red light attached. I have 3 so an old man will know when the refrigerator, water heater and basement freezer are on. Wire diagram is in the box.

I was holding off until we had a picture from "darbyjudy," but figured since the recommendations had veered into using household 120V switches and add-on LEDs I'd pass along this info.

The OP's coach is a 2017, so I expect it would have a lighted water heater switch- one that would not require modification, rewiring, etc., just replacement if its lamp had failed. I mean, manufacturers are trying to save money on every component, but I'm hoping they didn't on this one.

The OP's coach may or may not use Sigma switches and indicators on the "convenience center" (a.k.a., "monitor panel"). Here is a data sheet on the "1 and 1U" switches. Sigma does not sell directly to retail customers.

I replaced my coach's Sigma switches and indicators with LED versions. They are drop-in compatible with the originals. I bought enough for all the switches/indicators, and will replace the bulb versions as they fail.

A1-31 SWITCH 12V BLACK W/RED ILLUM SPST ON/OFF 14/28V LED

Indicator (LED):
1Z-03-U INDICATOR PANEL 14V BLACK W/RED ILLUMIN

I seem to remember I had to ask them to ship by least expensive method, as the default cost more. I could have them confused with another supplier, though.

They order these from the manufacturer (Sigma) once a week (or so), so you may find they take a while to get to you

Hopefully, the link above shows a switch that's compatible with "darbyjudy's" convenience center.

I was thinking propane with my above post but if the OP wants 110 volt, then something like this might work.

I installed one similar to this with the Hott Rod and it has worked great.

IF OP has:
Suburban WH then electric element uses a 120V AC On/Off Switch
Atwood WH then electric element uses a 12V DC On/Off Switch

Use LEDs with double terminal on load side of switch..light is then energized when switch is ON
OR
Purchase/swap On/Off with lighted rocker/toggle switch

This is an easy mod.just depends on which WH and what switches are used.
