2004 Horizon 40AD ISC350 Coolant Tank

After not finding the posts about those (John C?) that changed out their plastic coolant accumulator tank to a metal one, I need help with the part and procedure.

If my frail memory serves me well (and it generally does not) it was a Sterling Truck part that was used, and was not plastic, but metal, with a sight glass.

Anyone remember this one?

We are about to make a cross country trip without a Toad, and I don't want to chance it.

Anyone have one of these fail from cracks?

Thanks!

I believe that it is a 'Century' plastic tank that folks have had installed, although I did see something just recently that mentioned a new metal tank with a sight glass. John C hangs out over on rvforum (Winnebago-specific issues). You might want to search over there as well.

Following is a quote from John Canfield in another post -- don't know if this will help you are not --- I looked for the photos he talks about but, could not find them.

"My new surge tank is from a Century Class Freightliner truck. The change was approved by the factory. The big problem now is I can't unscrew the fill cap and add fluid since the cap is now on the top and not the side like the original. I'll have to use a small bilge pump if I need to add fluid. This is an acceptable situation since I never needed to add fluid anyway.

You can see a picture of the new tank in a post of mine - do a forum search for the thread.

Really Appreciate it!

You can also call Freightliner at the Gaffney Location. They replaced our surge tank with the Century class tank. They should be able to give you a complete parts listing.

It is a plastic tank but is very transparent.

Edit:

I found my receipt for the tank replacement.

Surge tank 1 ea. p/n 05-23045-000 $ 90.03
Cap-Surge Tank 1 ea. p/n 05-20763-001 $ 10.05
Union Restrict 2 ea. 05-23345-001 $ 1.76
Clamp 6 ea. 23-09132-005 $ .80

Labor $ 170.00

These are November 2008 prices.

Jim,

Thanks for the reply.

Is the filler neck in a disadvantageous position?

DO you know if it bolted up, or what was necessary to get it in?

Thanks so much. I'll call them, but I wanted your hands on experiences as well.

It is easy to service the tank, I think they just modified the existing bracketry.

I did forget to say that this was installed on my 2007 Vectra that has an ISL 400. I think the tank installation is the same.

Yep, for reference, the parts are as follows:

(freightliner numbers)

Tank 05-23045-000 (about $102)
Cap 05-207630-001 (about $8)
Barbs (2 needed ) 05-23345-001 (about $4 ea.)

There is a nice photo get up of this at Replacing RV Surge Tank

Thanks for all of the help!

Jim;

When Gaffney replaced your tank, did they have to cut up the mounting bracket like what was done in the pictures referenced below?

Our tank is leaking and I have a temporary fix via epoxy. I have fabricated a cover so the sun no longer shines on the tank. I am going to Gaffney first half of 11/10.

We need the coolant changed also, but I am having a 'discussion' with Gaffney about the manner in which the coolant change procedure is done. Apparently Gaffney does not follow the Freightliner RV Chassis Maint. Manual which says 'flush the system'.
