'18 Navion 24V Black Tank used for Toilet AND Sink?

I have discovered that the sink in my bathroom also goes
into my black tank.

Surprised to see this as I would imagine all sinks would
drain into the gray tank.

From what I can tell only my kitchen sink and shower go into
the gray tank.

Does anyone know why winnie would drain the bathroom
sink into the black tank instead of the gray tank?

Many RV manufacturers do this. I suspect it's because the gray tank tends to fill up much faster than the black.

I think it is pretty simple - most people do not use enough water when flushing the toilet in an RV. Adding water from sink (it is pretty small) along with soap residue, keeps the black tank materials liquid. Anyway, the black tank is bigger. We always fill up our gray tank well ahead of the black tank.

Our 2018 View 24D has the bathroom sink draining to the black tank, too. Our first View, a 2006 23H, was plumbed that way, too. Don’t recall how our 2012 Navion 24G was ...

In our Minnie Winnie the bathroom vanity is directly over the black water tank. I'm thinking simple economics and ease of motorhome assembly here. Since bathroom sinks are not used much, I see no drawbacks to draining it into the black tank.

I think that is common practice. Saves time and money on construction and puts more water into the usually under served black tank.

I think my 2018 Travato does that as well. The Black and Grey tanks aren’t that big since it’s a class B. But that tends to make sense now.

Actually this is beneficial especially when boondocking. If your gray water tank fills up faster than the black water tank you can use the bathroom sink instead of the kitchen for some or more of your cleaning needs which can extend your stay before dumping. My Itasca Spirit (Mini Winnie) is set up this way too. From a plumbing perspective, the black water tank is much closer to the bathroom sink and easier to connect.

Black Tank used for bathroom Sink

For those of you with a View/Navion where the bathroom Sink drains onto the Black tank, are there are "foul-smell" issues?

Thanks.

There should be no detectable odor coming from a sink draining into the black water holding tank if the drain trap is functioning properly. There may be a "p trap" or a waterless "trap" on your particular model but either should stop any odors from escaping the black tank, if functioning properly. After what I have experienced owning an RV for 5 years, it wouldn't surprise me if there was no trap installed on the bathroom sink. So, check to see if you have a trap installed and check if it is functioning properly.

OK, that puts my mind at ease!
BTW, is that the way your RV is hooked-up (bathroom sinks drains to Black tank)?

Thanks.

Yes. My RV's (2015 Itasca Spirit 27QP same as Mini Winnie) bathroom sink drains into the black water holding tank. And if I remember correctly, it has a waterless trap which I believe is some sort of check (one way) valve. Whatever, it's been working well so far.

Ok, so I take it that you both a P-trap (that holds water, hence shields odors, like in a regular home sink), and also a one-way valve (like those found in a home splinker system).

I say that because I suppose that a "waterless" one-way valve would not keep out the odors, so I'm sure you'd have noticed odors issues by now.

Thanks!

No "p-trap". Waterless only. I don't know exactly how they are designed and don't much care as long as they work. The galley sink also has one. No problems with either. Some day I may research the design. Just too busy right now.

If yours is not working then I would assume that something solid got stuck in the valve and is keeping it at least partially open. Hair is a likely suspect IMO. But most anything else is possible.

OK... Fair enough!
BTW, I have not ordered the Navion 24D yet... Just doing the research before pulling the plug.

Thanks!

For trying to find what's under the RV when we have a post 2010 model, this is a great site as it has interactive drawings that after getting the hang of using will let you "look through walls" and turn the RV all around to trace out things like plumbing lines, etc.
