As an X Electronics technician, VDC to me means Volts Direct Current (as opposed to VAC or Volts Alternating Current). Please forgive my lack of understanding. What is a ‘VDC’ that needs to be soldered?

In this case, the VDC is the Freightliner Vehicle Data Computer...FL also refers to it as the VDU.

Several of us with early 2000's coaches on FL XC chassis have had problems with the signals to air gauges being intermittent. Apparently, a number of the VDU's in that era had some cold solder joints. FL wants $418 for a new VDU but it is fairly easy to remove the VDU, pry off the cover and re-solder the afflicted joints. Worked for me.

You make a good point about TLA's (Three Letter Acronyms) and in fact Acronyms in general.. My first thought was "Video Display Council" and I"m a certified electronics tech too. (Since you'd never solder Volts DC, though I do solder using AMPS DC and that takes VOLTS DC to generate)

Of course you can also have fun with acronyms. For example I'd like to suggest a name for the government agency which Obama wishes to have oversee the auto industry in this time of crisis.

The Federal Uniform Bureau of Auto Recovery

And the agency that would oversee the auto warranties for buyers of cars should the manufacturere cease to exist:

Federal Uniform Bureau of Auto Repair

You will note they are both FUBAR

Hi smlranger,
I am having the same problem with my Dutchstar on a Freightliner chassis. I need to get the instructions for which solder joints to fix. Do you still have this available?

I was thinking Video Distribution Center. Very common in an RV.

I would LOVE to see the VDC and where it is. My gauges have been fluctuating for years now. It's driving me NUTZ!

Freightliner provides the VDC/VDU but the coach maker decides where to put it. On my Winnebago DP, it is mounted on a bulkhead above the engine on the driver's side. The VDU is a thin square box with to electrical connections and two air lines connected to it.

hitechal,
in my Dutch Star the box is located to the front of the engine compartment. In order for me to reach it, I had to go through the hatch in the bedroom. It's right there with easy access after opening the hatch. I have to say that following the instructions from smlranger, it appears that the repair was successful. However, a trip down a bumpy road will tell the whole story. I also found the connector to the box was very dirty. I clean that thoroughly at the same time. If you want the instructions and pictures I got from smlranger, send me a private msg with your e-mail.

dc8cappie: Just fyi, with an '05 I would suspect you have the MMDC rather than the older VDC/VDU. That's what I have.

Regarding TLA's.. Take a look at DOS
Denial Of Service
Disk (based) operating System
Disk Operating System (Commodore Business Machine, Pet through 128)

Or DNS

Domain Name Server
Distant Network Service.

There are many abbreavations we should not use

TV Well I"m watching Television as I type.. Tow Vehicle.

I use AC to mean current, alternating, A/C for Air Conditioning. but ... Not all do.
