We recently got our new 2002 35U Adventurer and discovered that there is a hissing noise related to the application of the brake pedal. First, I thought it was the brakes themselves, but later realized that the harder I pushed when stopped, the louder the noise got. The coach stops fine, but the noise is irritating. Any ideas???

It is your bell crank under the hood that is making the noise. When you let off the brake pedal it should stop. This sound is normal. have someone step on the brake while you look under the hood, you will see a vertical rod that is turning and making the sound. It the sound does not stop when you let off the brake, you have a problem with lubercating it.
Workhouse have been installing grease fitting in the older motorhomes. If yours has not be added you might want to get it done.

or it maybe it's a nest of snakes under the brake pedal and they are hissing at you as you step on them....

I checked for snakes first, but fortunately found none. The sound does stop once the pedal is released. What is the "bell crank"?

I thought a bell crank was related to the steering, is there such a thing on the brake peddle also? Just curious, not familiar with a Ford or Workhorse chassis.

Did not see the bell crank under the hood. Must be a GM thing.

Hi Pic of a bell crank on a workhorse chassis. When you say you hear the noise when stopped, do you mean with the engine off?

The noise is only heard with the engine running (idle or when slowing) and the brake pedal depressed. Sounds like a vaccuum leak.

Makes sense. Is the pump near the pedal or is there a line near the pedal that might be leaking?

Wow, can't believe how long this has gone on without getting it right.
No vacuum assist on your Ford. Hydraulic assist. And it's noisy. Most, if not all, are. (There's an electric assist for it when the key is on, the engine's not running, and the brake pedal is pushed. That's a separate noise.)
Check out the Ford Chassis section for more discussion on it.

Thanks Tim. I will check out the Ford Chassis section (I did not know there was one) but it sounds like all is OK, just noisey.

Tige,
Try searching for Hydroboost. My 2002 Suncruiser (Ford F-53) does the same thing, and apparently it is quite common with the Ford chassis coaches.

Hi the hydroboost system gets its power from the steering pump, if for any reason there is insufficent power the electric motor back will cut in, its controlled by a pressure switch in the hydraulic boost line. I suppose its possible that on tick over thats whats happening.

Thanks for clearing that up, I knew it was a pump but thought vacuum instead of hydraulic. Mine works anytime I step on the brake, engine running or not.
