When I purchased my trailer I did opt for the two 6 volt battery set up. This was recommened by a friend of mine. I did not know that with the 12 volt battery set up should you more or less drain the battery you will damage the 12 volt battery, whereas the 6 volt battery setup the batteries are not subject to being damaged should you drain the batteries. The generator will allow me to use the A/C unit, If used with the batteries they will be in need of recharging very soon. I could not imagine running the A/C unit with Solar.

Don,
Re: Mileage. I’ve an 07 Dodge Ram with 175,000 miles, which I bought new in 07. It has the hemi and 3.92 gears. I used to have an outback 23rs which was similar in size and weight to your winnie. I got 8-9 mpg pulling it. We just bought a Winnebago instinct 28rbds at the end of June. It has a dry weight of 7000 lbs, so at least 8000 - 8500 loaded. We did a 500 mile trip with it last weekend. The truck’s computer was telling me we were getting 7.8-8 mpg. However, actual math told me we got 6.7 mpg on one tank, 7 on another and 7.5 on another. Yikes! Those numbers were pulling at 55-65 on 65mph roads and 60-72 on 65mph roads. The biggest difference came from the amount I used cruise control.

It has been my plan to keep this truck to 225k or so miles. I’m thinking that when I replace it, I will look closely at the new 1/2 ton diesels which should tow in the mid to high teen mpg. On the other hand, this hemi has given me 175k miles and has only had oil changes, brakes, 2 water pumps and a couple of ball joints. Aside from gas it has been incredibly inexpensive to operate.
