Access to hot water tank bypass

Has anyone made a modification to the louvered cover shown? It is very flimsy and a pain to get in and out. Noticed this when winterizing. Been trying to think of something easier to get in and out....

I made a panel and used spring/rolller catches to hold it on.
It doesn’t have any vent holes but I’m not sure they are really necessary.

If so I will rout some slots in it.
