Winnebago Opinion Needed

Just put an offer in on a 2002 Winnebago 39QD. 49,000 miles. Has the 330 hp CFE 7.2L Cat engine.

Is there anything I should pay attention to?

Does anyone know of issues with this coach?

Strong points?

As always, thanks for your opinions!

This question would be more for general opinion.

How does a 39' Winnebago DL Diesel Pusher place in RV choice? I realize there are more plush coaches, but I see this brand as an all round dependable coach.

Thoughts?

Its a great coach, we bought one new in 02 had it for 8 years and 58,000 miles, the 39 QD is a very comfortable floorplan with lots of storage, also it handled great, very easy to drive. Send a private message if you want additional info on specifics.

We have the 2002 36GD with same drive train. We bought ours used in 2005 with 31,000 miles and now have 82,000 miles on it. It has been a good coach. Like all of these things, there are ongoing maintenance issues. How old are the tires? If more than 6 - 7 years old, I would want new ones installed or the price adjusted accordingly. A new set of shoes for that baby will run $2,800 - $3,500 depending on what brand you select.

The CAT/Allison combination is generally bullet proof if it has been properly maintained. I would certainly want to see evidence of required maintenance. You can always have an engine oil analysis done to get an idea of the overall health of the engine. That engine has a fan pulley on the top of the engine that needs a shot of grease at least annually. Since an engine failure, while unlikely, can be very expensive I would consider having a competent diesel mechanic check things over. CAT recommends a valve adjustment at 40,000 miles on that engine so has that been done? If not, that is a $250 - $400 service item depending on who does it.

Winnebago makes a good, solid coach. However, there are some issues that need to be checked. The roof-to-sidewall seam needs periodic checking and re-caulking so inspect to see if that has been done. Check all roof seals around skylight, vents, etc. At 10 yrs of age, those things are likely in need of re-doing.

Check out all the coach systems. Water heater, heat pump, water pump, fridge, microwave, etc. Some of the hydraulic hoses for the slide systems were known to leak in those model years so make sure they are all good.

Our 39QD, purchased new in 2002, has been trouble free for 11 years and 80,000 miles of full timing.

I second what has already been posted.
Cat motor adequate for our needs.
Floor plan is very livable.
Storage is good.

Items to look at unique to this model:
Make sure the propane tank has been strapped to the chassis. (safety recall of 2003)
There was a service bulletin on the HWH hoses on the 2002 slides. Check for leaks in the compartment behind the outside radio as well as the visible hoses.

We have had to replace the coolant surge tank and heater core. This model/year/ manufacture has served us well. Would like full body paint and three slides but would do it again.

Don't know what your bid is, but you should be able to get real value.

Thanks all.

We opted out on this one. The decals weren't original and white sides were yellowed. Couldn't live with that.

Most any of the coaches from those years before full body paint was offered will have yellowing gel coat unless they have been garage kept and polished often. Instead of getting a new coach (and since we otherwise liked the 2002 Journey), we had our's painted a couple of years ago. It was not cheap but we have a 10 yr old coach that looks new.

I have the Itasca Horizon 39QD and it's the same coach.

I like mine -- but it had yellowing walls. So in 2010 it got repainted to look like a 2005 Winnebago model and I get compliments all the time. The paint cost a bit, but it was a LOT cheaper than getting a new coach.

Many of the issues have been noted already.

HWH hoses, the coolant tank and caulking...

What was the ask price on it if I may ask?

They were asking $54,500 and I could have got it for $47,500.

What did you pay for new paint and decals?

I did not replace decals. They removed all decals prior to painting the coach. My 36' coach with 5 different base colors and four coats of clear was $13,000. 2 1/2 years ago when mine was painted, I got estimates ranging from $11,000 to $20,000 to paint the coach.
